WHY SERVICED SHOULD MEAN SERVICED
When it comes to watches I do not ever say “I know it all” because I am self-taught and am continually learning -EVERY DAY. Yet, what I learn I retain. And I learn fast. That is my blessing. I am, after all, a master of many subjects and trades. From self-mastered Mechanics, Woodwork, Goldsmithing, Jewelry, Landscaping, House Renovation, ITT, Hosting & Design, to building over 1000 websites, writing over 10,000 articles on subjects as varied as reef aquariums , koi ponds, woodwork and politics to religion, cigars, martial arts, law to being a published author and more … I am the type of person who just has to continually feed my brain and I must master the subject. Some people tend to think it braggart.. others disbelieve until they spend a normal 20 hour day with me, or view the letters and articles that plaster the walls. I am a proud person who rose from the streets with a fourth grade education to master my own destiny and life.
Yet it is TIME that is the master… and once again, TIME becomes in essence the master of my life.. how about you …. but, you say, what has that to do with an essay on Why Serviced Should Mean Serviced?
GSW counts on eBay.
GSW BUYS and SELLS on eBay. eBay is integral to GSW/GSWW. For a long TIME eBay has been good to GSW and GSW good to eBay. GSW has purchased more watches on eBay than it has sold on eBay. It takes TIME to find a watch and to bid on it on eBay, and then wait to receive it. And, when GSW buys a watch on eBay. TIME is taken to read what the vendor/seller is offering, check who they are, then critically view the images, and, then, ultimately, read BETWEEN the lines, and write the vendor/seller if necessary BEFORE a decision to buy or not to buy is made. It then takes TIME to inspect, service and restore if necessary, and begin the time cycle of placing the watch back on eBay.
Anyone that has read our offerings can see that our detail is direct, that 90% of all offerings are photographed with all portions of the watch at high resolution and the description detailed and warranty and appraisal offered; takes an hour and a half to two hours just to complete one watch offering!
Thus, it becomes a TIME issue when a watch advertised arrives not what it was advertised as…
The words FULLY SERVICED, SERVICED, RECENTLY SERVICED, SERVICED LAST WEEK, I SERVICED THE MOVEMENT, SERVICED MOVEMENT, AND, RUNNING, WORKING, WORKS PERFECTLY, WINDS, TICKS in sentences when tied to the description of a watch that turn out to be TIME BREAKER [PUN INTENDED] is the cause of this article.
In the past month, we had 3 watches arrive that were all mislabeled/advertised as SERVICED and/or RUNNING. It took 30 days to receive one of them and we are still waiting for the refund! AND IT COST GSW/GSWW TIME AND MONEY to ship back to wait for a a refund! It costs TIME and MONEY because our cash is not in hand and we have to ship back! Over 75 dollars worth just on the ones we shipped back (we ship double boxed insured signature required).
THE SERVICING OF A WATCH : WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SERVICE A WATCH
To service a watch means to disassemble the watch completely. From band and case to hands and dial, movement and any pushers, crowns stems. Inspect for wear and/or damaged parts, advise to any additional costs, professionally clean all movement parts, clean and light buff metal cases and bands when appropriate, reassemble the movement, oil and lube movement, clean dial, replace back seal and pusher/crown seals, [use silcon 7 in all pusher and stem tubes], reassemble/caseup the watch and time.
Q: What is the difference of FULL service Vs Service?
A: There is none. Technically speaking, the resealing of a watch with new gaskets/seals and the oiling/grease/silicon lubing of the movement while the case is open (without complete disassembly) could be stated as to be a SERVICE, but it would not meet with the consistent rules of watchmakers as being SERVICED.
Q: What is the difference between FULLY SERVICED and SERVICED. ?
A: There should not be any. It would be CONFUSING. Yet, due to the fact we have lots of individuals performing their own work, they tend to use the wrong word thus the wrong definition.
Q: What is a STANDARD SERVICE?
1. WATCH IN GOOD SHAPE.
A watch in good condition may only require a standard servicing. Disassembly and cleaning followed by lubrication and calibration. As long as there are no rust damaged or broken parts, the turn around time is most often under 10 days.
2. WATCH IN NEED OF PARTS:
If your watch needs replacement parts such as a new crystal, crown, stem, and we have it in stock, the same turn around time will apply. If parts have to be ordered or found, you are advised of the estimated time and cost.
3. HIGH GRADE RESTORATION:
High end watches such as Rolex, Piaget, Patek are more expensive to restore & repair. Parts cost more and specialized tools are required. The cost to repair & restore high grade watches are determined by the brand and it’s needs. “Complication” which is the definition of the complicated movements of many chronographs, automatics, day-date and calendar watches require additional bench time.
4. DIAL REFINISHING:
All watch dials can be restored. Each is priced according to it’s complication and finish. Multi colored lettering means additional stamping applications. Stick-on verses pinned markers can mean additional time. Thus, each dial is processed according to it’s complication.
