Freemason Symbols: Masonic symbology has come down to us from the cuneiform scripts of the ancient Sumerians, circa 3000 B.C.. as well as the ancient Mesopotamians and Persians. Cuneiform writing was a series of pictographs (symbols) which were drawn on clay tablets with a blunt reed (or stylus).
The Hour-Glass is an emblem of human life; behold! how swiftly the sands run, and how rapidly our lives are drawing to a close. We cannot, without astonishment, behold the little particles which are contained in this machine, how they pass away almost imperceptibly, and yet to our surprise, in the short space of an hour, they are all exhausted. Thus wastes man! today, he puts forth the tender leaves of hope; tomorrow, blossoms and bears his blushing honors which upon him; the next day comes a frost, which nips the shoot, and when he thinks his greatness is still aspiring, he falls, like autumn leaves, to enrich our mother earth.
1AM Column of Beauty.
Column of Beauty.
As is only natural in a society whose profession is Masonry, most of its symbols are taken from the Science and Art of Architecture. Prominent among these are the three columns of Wisdom, Strength and Beauty, placed respectively in the East, West and South, reminding us that there are three requisites for the erection of any great or important edifice: 1, It must be wisely planned; 2, it must be strongly built; 3, it must be pleasing to the eye.
Masonic Gavel is used to symbolically divest the heart and consciousness of all the vices and superfluities (excesses) of life in order to ready ourselves as if we were living stones, open to be shaped into a spiritual being that is pleasing to our Creator.
The sun, moon and stars, known in Scripture as the host of heaven, are found to be to the fore of Masonic imagery
4AM Master’s Apron
The Master Mason apron teaches the aspiring Mason that none are admitted to that honor but such as were cleansed of all impurities of both body and mind. Innocence of Conduct and Purity of Heart

Each ancient crafted mason!
Then brithers let a halesome sang
Arise your friendly ranks alang .
Guid wives and bairnies blithely sing
To the ancient badge wi’ the apron string
That is worn by the master mason!
5AM The Square
The Square is an emblem of virtue in which we must “square our actions by the square of virtue with all mankind”.When these 2 Masonic tools [The Square The Compass] are placed together with God (the Creator) as our central focal point… (just as King Solomon built God’s Temple, first… and then built his house around it), peace and harmony is the result.
FLEUR-DE-LIS: Also called Lily of France, it was first an adaptation of the Gaulish lily representing the Virgin Juno. Among goddess worshippers, it apparently had several meanings, including the Triple Goddess. It appeared in Arthurian legends as well as on the French (and other national) “coat-of-arms” and royal or military emblems.
The fleur-de-lis of heraldry is the white lily flower, a perennial bulbous herb of the genus Lilium Candidum of the family Liliaceae. The lily has six petals shaped in the form of a six-pointed star. Consequently, its Hebrew name, shoshan (shohshahn), is derived from the number six, shesh (shehsh). The female given name Susanna and its various forms are transliterations of the Hebrew name Shoshana, derived from shoshan, the lily flower. In heraldic ordinaries and subordinaries, the fleur-de-lis motif represents the sixth son, based on the lily’s six petals. This large, beautiful, and delightfully fragrant flower can still be found in the Galilee and Mount Carmel forests in northern Israel
7AM The Compass
The Compasses exemplify our wisdom of conduct,… the strength to “circumscribe our desires and keep our passions within due bounds”. When these 2 Masonic tools [The Square The Compass] are placed together with God (the Creator) as our central focal point… (just as King Solomon built God’s Temple, first… and then built his house around it), peace and harmony is the result.
Through the use of the trowel, spreading the cement, the single bricks and stones, once a chaotic mass, now stand united and solid, to form this noble edifice which we dedicate this day to the cause of God and Masonry. Through the symbolic service of the Masonic trowel, spreading the cement of brotherly love and affection, we, the individual members, once as separated and chaotic as these stones which house us, are as firmly bound together in a union which dedicates us one for all and all for one. . . What were this structure, which we solemnly consecrate, had not the trowel been honestly wielded, or if the cement and mortar should fail it? What were our brotherhood without the bond of love and affection to bind us close? And only as long as this bond continues to unite us, only so long will this Temple stand a true shrine of Masonry and of God. Only so long will our Brotherhood be a real brotherhood, worthy of its consecration and its vows.
For the “sun” symbolizes our spiritual consciousness, the higher aspirations and emotions of the soul; the “moon” betokens our reasoning or intellectual faculties, which (as the moon reflects the light of the sun) should reflect the light coming from the higher spiritual faculty and transmit it into our daily conduct; whilst “the Master of the Lodge” is a symbolical phrase denoting the will-power of man, which should enable him to be master of his own life, to control his own actions and keep down the impulses of his lower nature, even as the stroke of the Master’s gavel controls the Lodge and calls to order and obedience the Brethren under his direction. By the assistance of these lesser lights within us, a man is enabled to perceive what is, again symbolically, called the “form of the Lodge,” i.e., the way in which his own human nature has been composed and constituted, the length, breadth, height and depth of his own being. By their help, too, he will perceive that he himself, his body and his soul, are “holy ground,” upon which he should build the altar of his own spiritual life, an altar which he should suffer no “iron tool,” no debasing habit of thought or conduct, to defile. By them, too, he will perceive how Wisdom, Strength and Beauty have been employed by the Creator,
The Celestial Sphinx. Osiris usurped the position and title of the Celestial Sphinx “Giver of Life in the Beginning”. guardian of sacred places. The initiate must know it or lose the life of the Mysteries. If he can and does answer, the Sphinx dies for him, because in his respect the Mysteries have given up their meaning.
11AM THREE SQUARES
The 47th Problem of Euclid, also called the 47th Proposition of Euclid as well as the Pythagorean Theorem is represented by 3 squares.
, the 47th Problem of Euclid may be somewhat mysterious…. Pythagoras’s Theory “A general love of the Arts and Sciences”.
The essence of the Pythagorean Theorem (also called the 47th Problem of Euclid) is about the importance of establishing an architecturally true (correct) foundation based on use of the square. The 47th Problem of Euclid, also called the 47th Proposition of Euclid as well as the Pythagorean Theorem is represented by 3 squares. We are told that Euclid, (the Father of Geometry), who lived several hundred years after Pythagoras, worked long and hard to solve the 3:4:5: equation…and upon solving it, cried “Eureka!”…which means “I have found it”. He then sacrificed a hecatomb (a sacrificial offering to God of up to 100 oxen or cattle). “In any right triangle, the sum of the squares of the two sides is equal to the square of the hypotenuse.” (the hypotenuse of a right triangle…which is the longest “leg”…or the 5 side of the 3:4:5:).The Right Triangle, below, shows the sides of 3, 4 and 5. The angle created between the 3 (side) and the 4 (side) is the Right angle of the square. It represents the knowledge of how to form a perfect square without the slightest possibility of error. This has been of the highest importance in the art of building from before the time of the Harpedonaptae; long before Solomon’s Temple was built, the literally translation of Harpedonaptae, meant “rope stretchers” or “rope fasteners” of ancient Egypt ..
