THIS OFFERING IS FOR A 1969 HMT JAWAN PARA SHOCK MILITARY WATCH WITH BROAD ARROW, ALL STEEL CONSTRUCTION INCLUDING WATER PROOF SCREW CASE BACK.
**Jawan is a word in Hindi for SOLDIER. Jawan was registered as a trade mark by the West End Watch Co..
Founded by MM. Amstutz and Droz, owner of Alcide Droz & Sons, in 1886 in “The West End” district of London, West End Watch Co would become a well established trade name for the marketing of time pieces to the British controlled Mid-East and India Civilian and Military market.
By 1914, West End Watch Co were well established had in both the Indian Military and Civil Services markets. With acceptance of the British Military, West End Watch Co produced solid, well made and cased West End Trench and Pocket Watches for the Military [long tail broad arrow] and the Indian Civil Service [marked C.S. with C-tailed BROAD ARROW].
West End Watch Company developed the first waterproof pocket watch ever produced: “L’Impermeable” (Displayed at the International Watchmaking Museum of La Chaux-de-Fonds).
During the First World War, a large force of British and Indian soldiers were sent from Bombay to the Persian Gulf to reach Mesopotamia (Iraq). Each received a West End Watch Company watch; marking the first official use by British Forces of a West End “Military” Watch leading to the brand becoming famous amongst British Enlisted Forces.
In 1917, West End Watch Company changed its name to Société des Montres West End SA and was registered in Geneva. At the same time the sub-brand Lowan was also registered and introduced in England..
In 1934, the Société des Montres West End SA was the first brand to introduce the Incabloc anti-shock system invented by Mr. Braunschweig
Within several years of the end of WWII, West End Watch Company began producing watches in India.
In 1961. Hindustan Machine Tools [HMT 1953] set up a watch division utilizing equipment and movements from West End Watch co, with assistance from citizen watch company, to produce watches, including the Jawan, a military issue watch under the HMT logo utilizing the long shaft version of the English Broad Arrow.
THIS JAWAN ALEGEDLY BELONGED TO AN Australian Special Forces member who served in Vietnam in 1968./69.
BEFORE THE USA SENT THE FIRST GREEN BERET TO VIETNAM, THEY FIRST WENT TO AUSTRALIA TO RECEIVE TRAINING FROM THE AUSSIE SPECIAL FORCES IN GUERILLA WAR FARE.
THERE WERE TWO COUNTRIES THAT THE VIET CONG FEARED THE MOST, THE SOUTH KOREANS AND THE AUSTRALIANS. WHERE EVER THE KOREANS WERE BASED, WAS THE PLACE THAT HAD THE LEAST CONTACT WITH THE VIRT CONG.
WHETHER THE RUMORS OF IN COUNTRY AUSTRALIAN SPECIAL FORCES WEARING LEATHER STRING WITH VIET CONG EARS ATTACHED WERE TRUE OR FALSE, THE FACT THAT THE RUMOR PERSISTED WAS ENOUGH TO SPARK FEAR IN THE VIET CONG.
ON THE OTHER HAND, THE RUMORS OF THE SOUTH KOREANS MURDERING THOSE SUSPECTED OF COLUSION WITH THE CONG WERE IN FACT TRUE. MASS KILLINGS OF VIETNAMESE “CIVILLIANS” BY SOUTH KOREAN TROOPS WAS A FACT AND THEY TERRORIZED THE CONG.
THUS, WHILE THIS TIME PIECE WAS INDIAN MADE WITH AN INDIAN BRITISH BROAD ARROW, IT WAS RECOVERED IN VIETNAM AND THE ESTATE STATED IT WAS AUSSIE….
I decided to remove this JAWAN from my safe after a Patron offered more cash for the Zodiac Sea Wolf BY ITSELF, RATHER THAN MOUNTED ON THE CUFF STRAP WITH IN COUNTRY ZIPPO LIGHTER. WE HAVE SINCE PLACED A WHITE DIALS SEA WOLF ON THE CUFF AND THAT LEFT AN AWESOME HMT. THUS THIS OFFER
I have not restored the dial. The illumination WAS Radium, IT IS NOW AF LUMINOVA, A ZINC AND PHOSPHORUS MIXTURE. .
I did invest in another JAWAN, same date, to get parts for the movement -this movement work does not change the fact it is original. Unless a complete different movement is installed, the Servicing and/or Movement repairs do not alter it’s ORIGINAL STATURE and NATURE.
THE FIRST GREEN BERET “ADVISORS” WHO SERVED IN VIETNAM WERE TRAINED IN GUERRILLA WARFARE BY THE AUSTRALIAN SPECIAL FORCES. BESIDES THE US FORCES, AUSTRALIAN SAS MEMBERS WERE THE FIRST COVERT OPERATIVES IN THE EARLY 1960’S. IN FACT, AS I STATED, THE AUSTRALIAN SAS WOULD BECOME AS FEARED BY THE VIET CONG AS THE US NAVY SEALS WOULD IN THE LATE 1960’S. BOUNTIES WERE PLACED FOR THEIR DEATH OR CAPTURE.
Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War began with briefly TRAINING US SPECIAL FORCES. In 1962, 30 Australian Military Advisors were stationed in Vietnam. Over the decade that number grew to 7,672. Australian troops that deployed to South Vietnam included ground forces, support troops and the SAS [special forces].
The Vietnam War was Australia’s longest war only recently surpassed by Australia’s long term commitment of combat forces in Afghanistan. Initially enjoying broad support due to concerns about the spread of communism in Southeast Asia, controversy soon developed into an anti-war movement in response to Australia’s draft and the same conceived evils as those viewed in the USA.
From 1966 to 1971 three “sabre” squadrons of the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) completed two tours of Vietnam. The SAS was based at Nui Dat where it acted as the “eyes and the ears” of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) and operated throughout Phuoc Tuy province as well as in Bien Hoa, Long Khanh, and Binh Tuy provinces.
SAS personnel were highly trained and their role in Vietnam varied from conducting reconnaissance patrols and observing enemy movement to offensive operations deep in enemy territory. The SAS had the highest “kill” ratio of any Australian unit in Vietnam. The Australian SAS operated closely with the New Zealand SAS and New Zealand SAS soldiers were attached to each Australian squadron.
The withdrawal of Australia’s forces from South Vietnam began in November 1970 when 8 RAR completed its tour of duty and was not replaced.
A phased withdrawal followed, and by 11 January 1973 all Australian involvement in hostilities in Vietnam had ceased and only the Australian Embassy Platoon remained deployed in the country until 1 July 1973.
In April 1975, during the Fall of Saigon, Australian forces were deployed briefly to evacuate personnel from the Australian embassy.
CASE AND MOVEMENT
SPECIAL FORCES OPERATED WITH ARMY SUPPORT FORCES FROM 1960 THROUGH 1965. WHEN, IN 1964, THE NORTH VIETNAMESE ALLEGEDLY FIRED UPON TWO US SHIPS IN THE GULF OF TONKIN, CREATING THE ALLEGED “GULF OF TONKIN INCIDENT” OF AUGUST 2 & 4 1964, PRESIDENT JOHNSON ESCALATED THE VIETNAM SUPPORT MISSION TO A CONFLICT BY SENDING THE FIRST U.S. GROUND TROOPS TO VIETNAM
ON MARCH 8, 1965, THE FIRST US TROOPS, 3500 U.S. MARINES, ARRIVED IN DA NANG, VIETNAM. .
ROCK HAD THE SEA WOLF PICTURED ABOVE ON THIS STRAP. THE SEA WOLF WAS PURCHASED BY A PATRON LEAVING THIS ENSEMBLE LACKING A WATCH. SEARCHING THROUGH HIS COLLECTION, ROCK CHOSE A WELL WORN YET SEMI-RESTORED [DIAL WAS LEFT AS IS] JAWAN HE PICKED UP IN 1989 FROM AN ESTATE SALE OF AUSTRALIAN MILITARY ARTIFACTS..
AS YOU CAN SEE, DIAL WAS CLEANED. BUT THE RADIUM 12 3 6 AND NINE

THE DEER HUNTER
ANYONE WHO WITNESSED “THE DEER HUNTER”..CAN RECALL THE SCENE WHERE ROBERT DI NERO AND CHRISTOPHER WALKEN, AS PRISONERS OF WAR, ARE PULLED FROM THE BAMBOO CAGES BY THE VIET CONG AND FORCED TO “PLAY” RUSSIAN ROULETTE. THE SCENE INCLUDES THE PILE OF “ITEMS” PLACED ON THE TABLE BY THE BETTING CONG. YOU SEE A PILE OF OF VIETNAMESE, FRENCH AND AMERICAN CASH AS WELL AS THE GREATEST CURRENCY– WATCHES REMOVED FROM THE PRIOR/PREVIOUS PRISONERS WHO DIED THE WATCHES ARE OBVIOUSLY SWISS AND AMERICAN.
