ALLOW ME TO OFFER SOME FACTS AND HISTORY OF THE ELGIN NATIONAL WATCH COMPANY AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION OF STOP WATCHES, TO US AND UK AIR FORCES DURING WWII, SPECIFIVALLY THEELGIN A-8 NAVIGATION WATCH
THE A-8 IS A 10 SECONDS STOP WATCH THAT WAS UTILZED BY NAVIGATION CREWS TO SET THE GROUND SPEED OF NEARLY EVERY BOMBER THAT SERVED [OTHER PLANES ALSO USED THE A-8] IN THE VARIOUS FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES AND MANY BRITISH FORCES. IT WAS NAMED THE "JITTERBUG" BY AIR CREWS DUE TO THE FACT NOISE IT MADE WHEN RUNNING. MOST OF THE A-8 TIMERS WERE BLACK FACE WITH WHITE NUMERALS.
Air speed indicators on WWII aircraft were controlled by air being forced into the air speed indicator as you flew your plane. The problem was as you gained altitude less and less air entered the device and there was always cross winds straight winds so your speed, relative to the ground, was going to be either lower or higher depending on whether you are flying into the wind or with the wind. Gropund speed was required to precisely know your air speed which was important of you wanted to bomb a target, drop men from the plane, to preceisely time your flight.. and navigate properly.
To figure your actual ground-speed and compare it to the airspeed indicator and then adjust your navigation calculations accordingly, the pilot or navigator would pick out, say, a pair of known parallel roads or other landmarks that were already distance measured, they would then click the A-8 10 second timer on at the first mark then off at the second. Using the elapsed time along with calculations they could figure their actual ground speed and adjust instruments.
NOTE: THE A-8 IS US GOV MIL DESIGNATION SO THERE ARE ALSO RARE WALTRHAM A-8 WATCHES OPERATING THE SAME BUT WITH DIFFERENT WALTHAM MOVEMENTS/CALIBERS.
NOW WE COME TO OUR OFFER. AWWII ELGIN TIMER.
THIS ELGIN IS SO RARE WE HAVE FOUND/SEEN/ DISCOVERD ONLY 4 OF THESE IN 4 YEARS. THIS TIMER BY ELGIN IS CASED IN SOLID NICKLE. IT HAS A DOUBLE HINGED CASE BACK WITH INNER CASE BACK THAT SEALS MOVEMENT AND A OUTER CASE BACK WITH 4 HOLES: WHUCH MAKES THIS THE STRANGEST AND RAREST WWII TIMER USED BY THE FLYING FORCES.
OUR CONCLUSION THAT THIS WATCH IS MILITARY WENT BEYOND THE SERIAL NUMBERS NOT ONLY DATING THE PIECE TO MID-1944, BUT THE NUMBERS ARE SIDE BY SIDE WITH A-8 PRODUCTION SERIALS. IN ADDITION, THE MOVEMENT LACKED TWO FEATURES THAT WOULD MAKE IT AN A-8, IN FACT IT WAS BASED ON THE SAME ELGIN MILITARY MOVEMENT UTILIZED IN THE A-8
YOU SEE, AFTER I INVESTED IN THIS BEAUTY AND RECEIVED IT I THOUGHT, HECK, I GOT ANMOTHER "IT RUNS" ONLY TO FIND OUYT SOMETHING DID NOT WORK!!! IT HAD WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A PROBLEM..
WITH A COOL LEATHER POUCH IN OVERALL FANTASTIC CONDITION.
A LITTLE STITCHING AND BAM SHE WAS PERFECT
THE LOOK IS SIMPLY STUNNING
I LEFT THE BLUING ON THE BRASS SNAP
THE POUCH AND TIMER ARE EXCELLENT
THE FEATURES OF THIS WATCH WERE SIMPLY UNHEARD OF. AND THE CASE BACK HOLES WERE BURNING HOLES IN HIS BRAIN SO...I WENT ON A SEARCH FOR A BROTHER OR SISTER. AND THEN AFTER 12 HOURS ONLINE, I ACTUALLY STUMBLED ONTO ONE :
THE FACT THAT IT WAS MILITARY WAS EASY TO DETERMINE FOR THE TIME PIECE WAS EXACTELY LIKE THIS ONE BELOW, WHICH HAS THE " GADGET "THAT FIT THE REAR HOLES ATTACHED TO THE CASE BACK WITH A STICKER WITH THE WORDS/WRITING THAT IT WAS OVERHAULED AT A ORDINANCE AND REPAIR DEPO AT A NAVAL AIR STATION:
THUS, WITH A FEW CHANGES, SUCH AS 60 SECONDS TIMER, WITH LARGER BALANCE, IT WAS JUST LIKE THE A-8 AND WAS MILITARY , MADE BY ELGIN AND MADE FOR THE MILITARY..
BUT THE PROBLEM WAS STILL THERE. FOR SOME REASON IT ONLY WORKED WHEN YOU PHYSICALLY PUSHED AND HELD THE CROWN DOWN. MAN, I WAS TICKED... A. 60 SECONDS ELGIN TIMER THAT WAS UNLIKE ANYTHING I HAD SEEN - COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAN ANY ONE OF OUR 75 TIMERS COVERING 35 DIFFERENT COMPANIES AND STYLES. IN FACT, BEFORE I OVERHAULED IT, I HAD TO FIND THE PART THAT WERE BROKE OR MISSING IN THE MOVEMENT AND FIX IT.!
MILITARY WWII TIMER THAT WAS RARE.THE CONTROL MECHANISM IS LOCATED UNDER THE DIAL. I OPENED AN A-8 AND THE ELGIN I RECEIVED AND COMPARED THEM, I KNEW I HELD AN ELGIN
ALL TIMERS, STOP WATCHES AND CHRONOGRAPHS OPERATE THE SAME. THEY HAVE BUTTONS, PUSHERS, AND/OR PUSH IN CROWNS TO OPERATE THE TIMER. EACH ONE HAS FROM ONE TO THREE OF THESE THAT WORK A COMBINATION; YOU HAVE TO PUSH SOMETHING TO START THE CENTER SECONDS HAND GOING.
HOW IT WORKS IS THAT WHEN THE SECONDS HAND TURNS AND PASSES THE "TOP" [ "10" "12", "30" "60" SECONDS] IT THEN TURNS A MECHANISM THAT TURNS THE SMALL HAND IN THE UPPER REGISTER TO RECORD HOW MANY ROTATIONS. EACH TURN THIS IS REPEATED AS IT PASSES "TOP". THUS, RECORDING WHAT THE TIMER TIMES. A 60 SECOND TIMER LIKE THE ONE WE ARE OFFERING RECORDS ONE MINUTE EVERY TURN. SOME WATCHES HAVE MULTIPLE REGISTER RECORDING SECONDS, MINUTES, HOURS. SO, YOU PUSH A BUTTOM, OR PUSHER, OR PUSH-IN-CROWN AND THE TIMER STARTS AND RECORDS TIME.
SO, ONE CLICK ALWAYS STARTS THE TIMER. A SECOND CLICK, USING THE SAME SINGLE CROWN ON THE A-8 ,OR TOP PUSHER ON A CHRONO WATCH, STOPS THE WATCH/TIMER. IT STOPS WHERE IT IS RECORDING, IN THAT MOMENT; THAT IS THE ENTIRE REASON YOU USE A STOP WATCH.
NOW, WE THEN CLICK ONCE MORE AND IT RETURNS ALL HANDS TO TOP. THREE CLICKS WETHER USING ONE OR TWO PUSHERS..
SO, WHY ALL THIS WRITING AND READING? THIS ELGIN TIMER, BY ELGIN, FOR WWII USE, MADE IN MID 1944, HAS VA CROWN LIKE THE A-8, TURNING IT WINDS THE MOVEMENT LIKE THE A-8, BUT, THERE IS NO WAY TO CLICK TO GO STOP AND RETURN!
THIS TIMER DID NOT HAVE A COLUMN WHEEL OR ANY OTHER EARLEIR MECHANISM TO START STOP AND RETURN THE TIMER. IT WAS ACTUALLY CREATED FROM A BASIC A-8 CONFIGURATION AND THE COLUMN WHEEL WAS LEFT OUT WITH PURPOSE.The column wheel is a plate with columns on it. It serves as a switch between start, stop and reset functions.
..HERE IS THE MOVEMENT WITH RODICO HOLDING THE BALANCE FROM RUNNING. YOU CAN SEE IT IS LIKE THE A-8 WITH LARGER BALANCE.
YOU VCAN SEE THAT THERE IS NO BALE/BAIL. NOTHING BUT AS LONG TUBE WITH CROWN THAT HAS A BALL TOP WHICH GOES WITH THE FACT THIS TIMER WAS PRESSED INTO AN OBJECT AND THEN WAS PULLED OFF THE OBJECT. HAVING A CLICK THREE TIMES MECHANISM WOULD HINDER THE OPERATION.
THOUGH BOTH ARE THE SAME.
THE A-8 CASE IS NICKLE PLATED, THIS TIMER IS SOLID NICKLE.
THEDIAL WAS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE
ABOVE PIC BEFORE CLEANING
THE HANDS WERE IN BAD SHAPE WITH RUST FLAKING
YET THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO MOVEMENT OR SCREWS
TIMING FUNCTION WORKS PERFECT
II REMOVED THE HANDS
HERE THEY ARE BEING UV SEALED ON THE TIMER
DIAL CLEANED REPLACED HANDS SET AND SEALED
NOTE THE LONG TUBE AND LARGER THAN NORMAL CROWN.
THE CROWN HAS A ROUND
I DECIDED NOT TO CHANGE THE CELLULOID BASED CRYSTAL
REPAIRS TO LEATHER POUCH
THEPOUCH HAD MINOR DAMAGE
SOME STITCHING AND CEMENT FIXED HER UP
