RADIUM PAINT

The invention of radioluminescent paint was first developed by William J Hammer in 1902 when he mixed radium with zinc sulfide. This "paint" would soon be applied to watches and clock dials. George Kunz, a gemologist at Tiffany & Company would     patent this invention and, along with chemist Charles Baskerville, made their paint by mixing radium-barium carbonate with zinc sulfide and linseed oil.

While US manufacturers disregarded the radioluminescent paint, Europeans, especially the Swiss, it was utilized on and in everything. The first company to produce radioluminescent paint in the US was in 1914 when the Radium Luminous Material Corporation in Newark New Jersey was founded.

BROAD ARROW

A broad arrow or pheon is a type of arrow with a typically flat barbed head. It is a symbol used traditionally in heraldry, most notably in England, and later the United Kingdom to mark government property.

The Office of Ordnance was created by Henry VIII in 1544. It dates back to the position of Master of Ordnance, one of whom, Nicholas Merbury, was present at the Battle of Agincourt. The Office became the Board of Ordnance in 1597, its principal duties being to supply guns, ammunition, stores and equipment to the King's Navy. The headquarters and main arsenal of the Office were in the White Tower of the Tower of London. The broad arrow mark has been used over the years by the Office and Board to signify at first objects purchased from the monarch's money and later to indicate government property. With the demise of the Board in 1855, the War Department and today's Ministry of Defense continued to use the mark. The arrow also appears in the Ordnance Survey logo.

The broad arrow frequently appeared on military boxes and equipment such as canteens, bayonets and rifles, as well as the British prison uniform from the 1870s, and even earlier, that of transportees in British penal colonies such as Australia The broad arrow marks were also used by Commonwealth countries on their ordnance.

The broad arrow was used by the British to mark trees intended for ship building use in North America during colonial times. Three axe strikes resembling an arrowhead and shaft, were marked on large mast-grade trees.

It is currently a criminal offence in the United Kingdom to reproduce the broad arrow without authority

UNLIKE PREVIOUS MILITARY PURCHASES, DURING WWII, THE BRITISH LOOSENED THEIR STRICT CONTRACT PROGRAM. WHERE EARLIER TIME PIECES HAD TO MEET CERTAIN MINIMUM FEATURES PER THEIR EVENTUAL USE,  AND THEN BE HALLMARKED WITH A SPECIFIC PATTERN NUMBER [IE:PATTERN 4] REPRESENTING THE SPECIFIC TYPE AND USE OF THE TIMER OR WATCH  --AND OTHER EQUIPMENT-- WATCHES, TIMERS AND CLOCKS FOR MILITARY USE SIMPLY HAD TO MEET THE FEATURES OUTLINED. THE MINIMUM FOR WRIST OR POCKET WATCHES WAS STRAIGHT FORWARD WITH NO TESTING. A MINIMUM 15 JEWELS, WATER RESISTANT, AND ILLUMINATED OR NOT DEPENDING ON USE AND A FEWE OTHER FEATURES WAS ALL THAT WAS REQUIRED. MANY COMPANIES SUBMITTED WATCHES. AND THAT WAS THAT.

IMG_0373.JPG (36440 bytes)

ONCE SUBMITTED, MOST TIME PIECES HAD THE BRITISH BROADARROW/CROWS FOOT STAMPED ON THE CASE BACK IDENTIFYING THE WATCH AS BELONGING TO HIS MAJESTY --WITH THE MILITARY AS FRONT. SOME WERE ALSO STAMPED/HALLMARKET WITH THE LETTERS "GSTP". THIS STOOP FOR " GOVERNMENT SERVICE TEMPORARY PATTERN". THIS INFACT DEMONSTRATES THAT NO PATTERN WAS EVER CREATED FOR THE MILLIONS OF TIMEPIECES AND TIMERS. JUST LOOK AT MILITARY TIMEPIECES AND TIMERS PREVIOUSE TP WWII. THEY ARE ALL HALLMARKEDW/BROADARROW AND THE WORDS PATTERN W/A NUMBER. BASIC TIMERS WERE, SAY #3 PATTERN" WHILE SPLIT SECOND TIMERS "#4 PATTERN".

IMG_0392.JPG (27932 bytes)

NOW, PRIOR TO WWI, DURING THE JAPAN/RUSO WAR, WALTHAM WAS ONE OF THE LARGEST EXPORTERS OF WATCHES. CONTRARY TO THE SWISS BEING DOMINATORS OF THE WATCH INDUSTRY, PRIOR TO WWII, IT WAS THE USA  THAT WAS THE POWERHOUESE IN THE WATCH INDUSTRY. AND, IN FACT, EVEN GREAT BRITIAN WAS AN AMAZING LARGE WATCH PRODUCER BACK THEN, BEFORE A 4 YEAR BLITZ OF BOMBS AND A 6 YEAR WAR ENDED THIS FACT. IN FACT, NOT UNTIL WWII, WHEN US FIRMS RETOOLED TO MAKE WAR PRODIIUCTSM DID THE SWISS BECOME A POWER HOUSE. THEIR BEING NEUTRAL WAS KEY. WHEN THE WAR ENDED IT TOOK SEVERAL YEAR FOR THE US FIRMS TO RETOOL.BY THAT TIME THE SWISS HAD OPENED LOCATIONS AND SECURED DEALER FOR THE MANY SWISS BRANDS. IT WAS UNFAIR BUT THAT IS THE FACT.

SO, AS I WAS WRITING, WALTHAM BUILT A MIGHTY REPUTATION FOR 1ST CLASS WACHES AND BEGAN EXPANDING EVERY WHERE INCLUDING JAPAN.  AS THE BLITZ OVER ENGLAND CONTINUED FOR YEARS, SO WHERE ENGLANDS INDUSTRIES INVOLVED. THE NEED FOR PRODUCT COULD NOT BE FILLED WITHOUT THE US. THUS WHEN THE US BECAME ACTIVELY INVOLVED , ESPECIALLY WITH THE BOMBING OF EUROPE, THEY BEGAN SUPPLYING THE BRITISH. THIS AWESOME POCKET IS AN EXAMPLE OF THAT QUALITY.THOPUGH ONLY 9 JEWELS, IT WOULD OUT LAST EVEN THE SWIUSS 17AND 18 JEWEL POCKETS. WITH A SOLID CASE, KILLER ILLUMINATED DIAL, ADJUSTABLE 3 POS AND TEMP, IT WAS ONE OF THOSE ITEMS THAT WAS BUILT FOR WEAR. THEY SIMPLYWERE ALMOST UNBREAKABLE. IWOULD STATE THAT 25 ,000 OF THESE MULTI USE POCKET WATCHE WERE UTILIZED FROM AIRMEN TO GROUD POUNDERS. IF YOU WERE LUCKY TO GET ONE, YOU NEVER TURNED IT IN AT WARS END!!!!!!!

OH, AND LESS I FORGET, THIS CASE IS SCREW FDOWN! BOTHER TOP AND BOTTOM! THE CLOSEST TO WATER PROOING ONE COULD GET IN A POCKET WATCH. IT'S COMPETITOR WAS THE GERMAN ZENITH MILITARY. ACTED AND LOOKED LIKE THIS WALTHAM

SO WE BEGIN WITH AN OVERHAULED AND RESTORED WALTHAM HD 16S MILITARY WATCH
THAT WAS GIVEN TO THE BRITISH IN 1942. THE CASE BACK HAS A BROAD ARROW HALLMARK AND THE MOVEMENT IS THE 9 JEWEL, ADJ TEMP AND 3 POS. IT OPERATES LIKE ITWAS MADE INOUR TIME. SETS, WIDS AND THE NUMERALS WERE RE-ILLUMINATED TO LOOK LIKE THEY WERE LOOKING 70 YEARS AGO. THE HANDS, CATHEDRAL STYLE ARE ORIGINAL AND THEIR WINDOWS RE-ILLUMINATED.

IMG_0398.JPG (56027 bytes)

AS YOU CAN SEE. ONE WOULD NEVER KNOW THIS DIAL WAS RE-ILLUMINATED. NOR THE HANDS. NOTE THE HEAVY SILVER LUGS. THIS CONVERSION IS AWESOME.

IMG_0393.JPG (41949 bytes)

NOTE THE VINTAGE HEAVY DUTY STRAP. SOLID IN CONDITION THE LEATHER IS PLIABLE AND STRONG. A SECONDARY "STRAP" GOES THROUGH THE PRIMARY STRAPAND THROUGH THE LUGS WEREIT IS BUCKELED SIMILAR TO THE JAPANESE STYLE STRAPS. IT IS A LOOKER FOR SURE. FANTASTIC!

 IMG_0370.JPG (39727 bytes)

NOTE THE LONE BROAD ARROW. THIS IS GENUINE AND SEEN ON MANY OF THESE BEAUTIES BACK WHEN.
