The surname Wyler is a local surname; it is derived from the Latin word vilare, which means farmstead. This makes Wyler a topographic surname, which was given to a person who resided near a physical feature such as a hill, stream, church, or type of tree. Habitation names form the other category of surnames; they were derived from place-names. They were derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads. Other local names are derived from the names of houses, manors, estates, regions, and entire counties. As a general rule, the greater the distance between an individual and their homeland, the larger the territory they were named after.
First found in Upper Swabia, where the name Weiler came from aristocratic origins, and gained a significant reputation for its contribution to the emerging mediaeval society. The name Weilerr is derived from the Latin form "vilare" meaning farmstead. It was taken on by an ancient baronial dynasty, whose founding member appears as early as 813. This man was Hermann von Weiler, whom chronicles mention as being present at the founding of the monastery of St. George in the Black Forest.
This line became known as Weiler zu Weiler (a city near Heilbronn,) and many members held the position of Priori of the cloister Weiler in Blauthale which the family founded in the 11th century.
Burkhard Weiler was the Abbot of Sinsheim in 1468, Wolf von Weiler (1508-1585) accompanied Duke Christoph von Wuerttemberg on a campaign in France, and Dietrich von Weiler (1542-1602,) the chief steward and private tutor to the Duke of Wuerttemberg, united all the various estates of numerous branches into his own hands.
"Weiler" or "Weiller" later became more prominent as many branches of the same house acquired distant estates and branches, some in foreign countries, always elevating their social status by their great contributions to society.
By the 18th century, the name "Weiler" or "Weiller" could be the surname of a German Christian or Jewish citizen. .
By the late 19th Century, the famous "Weiler" or "Weiller" name would be altered to the English spelling/sounding "Wyler".
By the start of the 20th Century and the fallout of WWI, many men with the surname of "Weiler" or "Weiller", who were born in Switzerland or Germany, seeking wealth and business abroad, changed the spelling to WYLER. due In fact, men like Wilhelm Weiller, (July 1, 1902 July 27, 1981) who was born to a Jewish family in Mulhouse, Alsace in the then-German Empire, changed his name to the English version, William Wyler. William Wyler would become a famous wealthy multi academy award winning Film Director and Screen Writer in the United States.
In fact, the first WYLER settler in the US was Jacob Wyler, who landed in Pennsylvania in 1761 and, of course, William Wyler, who arrived in California in 1920
Which brings us to Paul Wyler, famous founder of the Wyler Watch Company , the engineer who developed the Incaflex Balance and the Single Case Water Proof System, the first WYLER 16 and 19-line precision movements and the famous Promoter who would use thee Eiffel Tower to demonstrate the toughness of his watches.
Paul Wyler, the first son of German Parents, was born on 15th June 1896. He was 18 years of age and attending school in Switzerland when WWII commenced. Between 1924 and 1930, he would establish the Wyler Watch company in Basel Switzerland.
Paul Wyler was, in fact, a genius. During his days, he would present the
world with watch designs nothing short of miraculous. His innovations would be copied by
just about every watch brands. Many US Issue Vietnam War watches used his case designs.
The INCAFLEX balance wheel was still in use in the 21 century. No company ever designed a
balance wheel like the INCAFLEX, nor better nor the same as. Between 1927 and 1940, Paul
Wyler would obtain seven Swiss patents for watch inventions. He would stun the world with
his Wyler 16 and 19-line precision movements with his legendary Incaflex balance wheel ,
and his single case water-proof case system. By 1934, the Wyler Watch was the official

Wyler even had a gift of creative generous when it came to publicity and promotion. He once gained worldwide notoriety with a spectacular marketing stunt in 1956, when two watches were dropped from the top of the Eiffel Tower and demonstrated that they continued to function.. Paul Wyler eventually moved to the United States and maintained the Wyler Watch Company in Switzerland and a New York office at the world famous , prestigious, Watch Makers Row on Fifth Avenue [ WYLER WATCH CO 630 FIFTH AVENUE ]. Of two of Wyler's most famous trademarks - Wyler Dynawind and the Wyler Incaflex --. the most spectacular, the Incaflex, was registered as a U. S. trademark while Wyler was living in Forest Hills, New York in 1949.
Though many spectacular watch designs, such as the LifeGuard series, and the 660 feet Divers series, and the Vietnam Era PX/BX R&R models would follow through the 1960's, his greatest achievement during this time was in 1960 when the manual and self-winding Incaflex models became the official railway watch of the Santa Fe Railroad..
