AVIA
BALL WATCH CO

IMG_7256.JPG (140017 bytes)

THE ABOVE AVIA SPRING BARREL
IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION
NO EXCESSIVE WEAR
IT IS FROM A RECENTLY RESTORED
A VERY WELL MADE
BALL WATCH CO
MANUAL WIND WATCH MOVEMENT
THE LAST NEW "WHITE STEEL" SPRING BROKE
WE ARE REPLACING IT
BEING THAT THE MOVEMENT IS A STANDARD VINTAGE WINDUP
WITH AN EASY ACCESS MAIN SPRING BARREL
[NOTE: STILL REQUIRES  MOVEMENT & DIAL REMOVAL]
WE ARE DEMONSTRATING JUST THE ACTUAL SPRING REPLACEMENT
USING A FACTORY PROVIDED ALUMINUM INSTALLATION DISK
THAT IS "ATTACHED" TO THE MAIN WHEN IT ARRIVES

top

IMG_7255.JPG (112417 bytes)

WE CLEAN EVERY TIME WE OPEN A BARREL AND THEN RELUBE

 IMG_7258.JPG (138923 bytes)

WE REMOVED THE NEW [INSTALLED AFTER RESTORE] SPRING

IMG_7252.JPG (114267 bytes)

OUR SECOND WHITE STEEL SPRING FOR THIS
BALL WATCH CO WRIST WATCH

top

IMG_7253.JPG (135731 bytes)

SO THE GOLD DISC HOLDS THE NEW MAIN SPRING
[FROM JULESBOREL]
THE GOLD DISC ALLOWS FOR EASY INSTALLATION

IMG_7259.JPG (113791 bytes)

THE MAIN SPRING IS THICKER THAN THE DISC
ALLOWING FOR THE PLACEMENT OF THE SPRING
WITH THE DISC INTO AND OVER THE BARREL
top

IMG_7260.JPG (109732 bytes)

WE PLACE THE DISC INTO THE BARREL
NOTING THE PROPER DIRECTION
OF THE END THAT CONNECTS TO ARBOR

IMG_7261.JPG (108257 bytes)

HERE WE ARE USING A SCREW DRIVER END.
IT FITS ALL THE WAY TO OUTER COIL
YOU PRESS DOWN TO INSTALL THE SPRING
DO NOT USE SOMETHING THAT DOES NOT FIT TO LAST COIL

IMG_7270.JPG (120741 bytes)

NOW THE SPRING IS INSTALLED
WHEN WOUND THE ARBOR WILL CATCH
NEVERWIND NEW MAINS BEYOND 5 TO 10 TIMES
FOR THE FIRST WEEK OR SO
WE ARE USING NEW HARDER WHITE STEEL
NOT THE SOFTER BLUED STEEL THAT WAS ORIGINAL
WHITE STEEL WILL REQUIRE A SLIGHT BREAK-IN PERIOD
THE SPRING MAY SLIP SOME UNTIL IT LOCKS AGAINST THE WALL
WE AT GSW GSWW MWB TRY AND RUN OUR NEW MAINS
FOR SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE DELIVERING

IMG_7324.JPG (130331 bytes)

REMOVE MOVEMENT
REMOVE AUTO ROTOR/BRIDGE
REMOVE BALANCE

IMG_7320.JPG (107450 bytes)

PLACE BALANCE INTO CLEANER

IMG_7321.JPG (114898 bytes)

SOAK A FEW MINUTES
THEN MOVE AROUND AND LIFT OUT

IMG_7323.JPG (109863 bytes)

DRY GENTLY WITH BLOWER

BE SURE TO OIL TOP BALANCE JEWEL
IT IS NOW DRY....

IMG_7313.JPG (133509 bytes)

WIND CROWN
USE SMALL OILER
TO MOVE PALLET FORK
VISUALLY CHECK FOR ANY TRAIN MOVEMENT
top

IMG_7311.JPG (149078 bytes)

REMOVE RATCHET WHEEL
REMOVE 3 BRIDGE SCREWS
DO NOT REMOVE CROWN WHEEL OR SPRING LOCK

IMG_7310.JPG (150821 bytes)

CHECK CROWN WHEEL WINDING LOCK
FOR PROPER WORKING ORDER

IMG_7306.JPG (156444 bytes)

READY TO PULL MAINSPRING BRIDGE

IMG_7305.JPG (147065 bytes)

WE LIFT OUT THE MAINSPRING BARREL

IMG_7304.JPG (171589 bytes)

YOU WILL WANT TO LUBE JEWELS
AND WEAR POINTS
FOLLOW THE SPECIFIC ETA MANUAL
OR ANY ETA  AUTOMATIC OIL POINT SHEET

top
IMG_7303.JPG (99791 bytes)

THIS IS THE MAINSPRING BARREL
I AM SHOWING WHERE TO OIL WHEN YOU COMPLETE THE INSTALL
THE CENTER ARBOR ONLY MOVES WHEN WOUND
THE ENTIRE BARREL MOVES AROUND THE ARBOR
SO A TINY DROP BOTH ON TOP AND BOTTOM WILL SUFFICE

IMG_7301.JPG (104233 bytes)

THE TEETH ALONG THE BARREL IS WHAT POWERS THE WATCH
WHEN SPRING IS WOUND, THE UNWINDING EFFECT MOVES THE BARREL
WHICH THROUGH THE TEETH RUNS THE WATCH

 IMG_7299.JPG (107307 bytes)

TO SEPARATE COVER
PLACE ARBOR AGAINST SOFT BUT FIRM OBJECT
SUCH AS A WATCH MAKERS PAD ON WOOD BENCH
USE FINGER NAILS TO LIGHTLY PUSH AGAINST BARREL
THE COVER WILL COME LOOSE
NOTE THAT THE SMALL HOLE FITS DOWN INTO MOVEMENT
AND LARGE HOLE FITS UP THROUGH RATCHET WHEEL

IMG_7293.JPG (116914 bytes)

WHAT DO WE SEE?
SOME OTHERS HAVE PRETTY MUCH TORE UP THE BARREL EDGE
SEE THE MARKS?
THE SPRING TONGUE HAS A HOLE THAT THE ARBOR GRABS WHEN WINDING
NOTE WHICH WAY THE SPRING IS SET.
IN THIS BARREL IT IS LEFT TO RIGHT  COUNTER CLOCKWISE
WHICH MAKES IT CLOCK WISE
WHEN ACTUALLY BACK IN THE MOVEMENT

IMG_7273.JPG (147976 bytes)

NOTE
WHEN REMOVING ARBOR AND SPRING
PLEASE USE A LARGE PLASTIC BAG
THINGS CAN GO FLYING

top

IMG_7276.JPG (168087 bytes)

SPRING REMOVED

IMG_7279.JPG (107829 bytes)

ARBOR REMOVED
NOTE THE SMALL CATCH FOR SPRING

 IMG_7278.JPG (99048 bytes)

THE BARREL IS FINE. DAMAGE WILL NOT EFFECT CLOSING OR OPERATION

IMG_7282.JPG (135065 bytes)

AUTOMATICS HAVE BRIDAL SPRINGS
THIS ONE WILL BE INSTALLED BY HAND

[FROM JULESBOREL]

IMG_7284.JPG (123894 bytes)

THIS GREASE IS ONLY FOR AUTOMATICS
IT IS ADDED TO THE WALL OF THE BARREL

IMG_7286.JPG (116979 bytes)

Grease ADDED

top

IMG_7289.JPG (119673 bytes)

NOW MAKE  SURE THAT SPRING IS GOING IN RIGHT DIRECTION
OLD FASHION INSTALL BY HAND

IMG_7292.JPG (106438 bytes)

WHAT IS LEFT IS THE ARBOR END
NOTE OPEN END?

IMG_7296.JPG (97868 bytes)

SNAPPING ARBOR INTO CENTER
IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCED
NO WORRY IN MOST CASES ABOUT GETTING
THE LIP TO CONNECT WITH SPRING END
IT SHOULD CATCH THE FIRST TIME SPRING IS WOUND

IMG_7262.JPG (115222 bytes)

IN AND READY

IMG_7267.JPG (119634 bytes)

THREE SMALL DROPS OIL
1/3 APART
THIS OLD WILL ALLOW THE SPRING
TO UNWIND WITH LIMITED FRICTION OF
TOP/BOTTOM OF SPRING AND TOP/BOTTOM OF BARREL

NOW RE-INSTALL IN REVERSE.
BEFORE YOU PLACE BALANCE BACK IN
WIND WATCH MOVEMENT AND USE OILER
TO NOW MOVE THE PALLET FORK
THE DRIVE TRAIN SHOULD WORK ON ITS OWN
AS LONG AS YOU MOVE THE PALLET FORK
BACK AND FORTH
IF IT DOES  NOT THEN THERE IS A PROBLEM

IMG_6597.JPG (188031 bytes)

WE BEGIN WITH A PRETTY MUCH SCARRED POLEROUTER  1-69
LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE HAS BEEN ACTIVE WITH SHARP TWEEZERS
LOTS OF SCRATCHING. THE BABY WINDS BUT WILL NOT RUN.
BALANCE LOOKS GOOD. HAIR SPRING COILED RIGHT BUT BUNCHING UP.

WE WILL NOT REMOVE FROM CASE YET. WE WILL PERFORM
OUR EXAMINATION WITH WATCH MOVEMENT IN CASE
WHEN WE FIGURE THE PROBLEM & INFORM THE PATRON
OF COSTS, WE WILL THEN TOTALLY REMOVE AND TEAR DOWN

SO WE FIRST REMOVE THE BALANCE
NOTE DO NOT PERFORM THESE CHECKS AND REPAIRS UNLESS
YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. YOU CAN BREAK A STAFF PIVOT OR
SCREW UP THE HAIRSPRING PRETTY FAST

WE HAVE CHECKED THE MICRO-ROTOR. PRETTY SIMPLE TEST AND VIEW
PROVES IT IS WINDING MAINSPRING. THESE ARE NOT COMPLICATED.
THEY HAVE A FEW PARTS THAT CAN BE CHECKED VISUALLY

IMG_6594.JPG (114654 bytes)

ONE SCREW AND A PERFECT GENTLE TWEEZERS GRAB AND SHE LIFTS UP AND OUT

IMG_6593.JPG (109744 bytes)

IN TO THE HAIR SPRING CLEANER GOES THE BALANCE COMPLETE
ONE SHOULD NOT FORGET THAT THE TOP INCABLOC WITH JEWEL
SHOULD BE OILED AFTER SHE DRIES. BETTER NOW THEN AFTER
YOU REPLACE IT AND HAVE TO LIFT THE BRASS SPRING RETAINER AND JEWEL

top

THESE SMALL GLASS "DISHES" WITH ROUGH OUTER EDGES
HAVE TOPS THAT DO NOT ALLOW THE CLEANER TO EVAPORATE.
THEY COME FROM CHINA AND ARE ON EBAY
LET ME SAY THAT THEY ARE
FANTASTIC

IMG_6583.JPG (95773 bytes)

HERE BALANCE COMPLETE WITH BALANCE COCK
IS DRIED AND TOP PIVOT JEWEL OILED

IMG_6591.JPG (195379 bytes)

SHE IS READY TO TEST

NOW, WITH MAIN WOUND UP
WE MANUALLY MOVE THE PALLET FORK
BACK AND FORTH WHILE VIEWING THE WHEELS
AND ESCAPEMENT WHEEL
NO MOVEMENT AT ALL

POLEROUTER-REPAIR-1.jpg (59217 bytes)

 top

WE NOW WILL REMOVE THE PALLET FORK

FIRST WE RELEASE MAINSPRING PRESSURES

IMG_6572.JPG (151986 bytes)

ABOVE YOU WILL SEE THE RELEASE FOR THE
MAIN SPRING AND BY PUSHING THE CATCH SPRING
WILL UNWIND
NEVER EVER REMOVE A BRIDGE WHILE
PRESSURE REMAINS ON  MAINSPRING

YOU WILL HEAR IT UNWIND

IMG_6586.JPG (113689 bytes)

 top

WE NOW REMOVE THE TWO SCREWS
FOR THE PALLET FORK BRIDGE
LIFT IT OUT
THEN THE FORK

WE NOW WIND THE MAIN SPRING GENTLY AND SEE IF THE DRIVE
TRAIN WILL SPIN THE HANDS FREELY.
IT DOES NOTHING

WE WILL NOW REMOVE MAIN SPRING

.IMG_6581.JPG (176016 bytes)

THIS UNIVERSAL 1-69 FEATURES A DETACHED MANUAL WIND MECHANISM
SO WE ONCE AGAIN REMOVE PRESSURE FROM MAINSPRING

WE REMOVE CROWN WHEEL SCREW

IMG_6580.JPG (195363 bytes)

NOW LIFT WE OFF THE WHEEL RIDER REVEALING CROWN WHEEL

IMG_6578.JPG (164347 bytes)

REMOVE CROWN WHEEL AND BUSHING

top

IMG_6575.JPG (182288 bytes)

WE NOW MOVE TO REMOVE THE BRIDGE

IMG_6574.JPG (138234 bytes)

WE REMOVE 1ST BRIDGE SCREW

IMG_6573.JPG (127691 bytes)

WE REMOVE 2ND BRIDGE SCREW

IMG_6571.JPG (195059 bytes)

BE SURE YOU PLACE PARTS IN CONTAINERS

top

IMG_6576.JPG (118333 bytes)

SCREW BUSHING CROWN WHEEL RIDER

IMG_6569.JPG (111683 bytes)

SEE THE INDENTION? THAT IS WHERE YOU PRESS TO REMOVE
PRESSURE BY UNWINDING THE MAINSPRING

IMG_6570.JPG (112116 bytes)

ABOVE IS A PIC OF THE SPRING LEVER THAT HOLDS
THE RATCHET WHEEL WHEN WINDING
AND THE SAME ITEM HAT YOU PUSH

TO RELEASE THE PRESSURE
