Tavannes Watch Co.

1905
By 1905, the 750 employees produced 450’000 watches and the production grew very fast to reach 750’000 pieces made by 950 employees in 1909. And, thanks to its constant innovation, Tavannes Watch Co won the Gold Medal at the Grand Prix de Bruxelles in 1910.
1915
The company’s 20th-century product range naturally included wristwatches of the most diverse character for example the shock-proof models with a protective cover over the fragile crystal glasses that were issued to soldiers in 1915.
1930
At the end of the twenties and beginning of the thirties, Tavannes Watch Co created new forms for watches like “La Captive” a desk-watch or the Belt-Watch, which consisted of completely new concepts at that time. These were followed by “waterproof” wristwatches, as well as wrist-chronographs equipped with Valjoux movements.'''
1938
In half a century, Tavannes built five factories in Switzerland, and became the 4th largest watch manufacturer in the world, having sold over 30 million watches. At that time they employed over 2,000 skilled watchmakers and produced over 4,000 watches a day.
1943
In 1943 the company launched its first automatic movement, the caliber 420, with a swinging arm winding in one direction. This movement was fitted into the square cased Watersport model, for example. The Tavannes Watch Co Distributor's network covered the whole world at this time.

FROM 1874 TO 1917,  JAPAN HAD SHED HER ANCIENT OUT-DATED WAYS AND MOVED WITH UNEXPECTED FORCE INTO THE MODERN WORLD.

JAPAN  HAD BECOME A BUILDER OF HER OWN ARMAMENTS, SHIPS, PLANES AND HAD EVEN  IMPROVED UPON THE ADVANCEMENTS OF THE MODERNIZED WORLD.

IN FACT, AFTER THE 1904-05 ANNIHILATION OF TWO VAUNTED AND POWERFUL RUSSIAN FLEETS, SHE HAD BECOME A WELCOME TREATY PARTNER OF THE USA, BRITAIN AND THE WORLD AT LARGE.

BY 1917,  DAINI SEIKOSHA WAS SEEKING WESTERN TECHNOLOGY TO IMPROVE THEIR  CAPABILITIES TO PRODUCE MODERN WATCHES. THEY INVITED SWISS AND AMERICAN WATCH COMPANIES TO JAPAN. THEY DID WHAT THE JAPANESE DO BEST. UNDER THE BANNER OF POSSIBLE EXPORTS, THESE COMPANIES WOULD, IN FACT, TEACH THE JAPANESE WOW TO MAKE WATCHES THAT, BY THE 1950'S, WOULD COMPETE TOE TO TOE WITH THE ENTIRE GLOBAL WATCH COMMUNITY.

1917 WALTHAM ADVERTISEMENT

IN 1917, JAPAN HAD AGREEMENTS WITH THE MOST ADVANCED COMPANIES IN SWITZERLAND AND THE UNITED STATES. THE ABOVE ADD IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO THIS OFFER AND ITS HISTORY. MANY SEIKOSHA MILITARY WATCHES CONTAINED WALTHAM AND OTHER SWISS AND AMERICAN MOVEMENTS, OR COPIES OF THE SAME! IN ADDITION, SWISS TECHNOLOGY AND FINISHING TECHNIQUES CAN BE FOUND IN THE LIMITED ANTIQUE VINTAGE JAPANESE TIME PIECES AVAILABLE TODAY,

THIS SEIKOSHA IS ACTUALLY AN SWISS IMPORT WITH SWISS    MOVEMENT AND THE CLOSEST EXAMPLE OF THE IMPORTED  WATCH MOVEMENTS THAT    JAPAN WOULD  EVENTUALLY COPY AND BRAND THEM SEIKOSHA.

WATCHES WHICH DATE FROM 1930 TO 1945

THIS BEAUTY IS A JAPANESE IMPORT
BRANDED & TITLED BY SEIKOSHA "FOREIGN".
IT WOULD HAVE A EUROPEAN MOVEMENT THAT EVENTUALLY WOULD BE COPIED AND NAMED
ONE OF THE SEIKOSHA BRAND NAMES
SUCH AS NATION OR DELIKATA OR SEIKO

THE SEIKOSHA WATCH >
SEIKO >  FOREIGN + NATION + DELIKATA + OTHERS....

I SPEND MOST OF MY "SPARE" TIME SEEKING CANDIDATES FOR RESTORATION,. I TRY NOT TO  COLLECT THEM, I RATHER SELL THEM-- SO I CAN DO IT OVER AGAIN. AS I HAVE WRITTEN MANY TIMES,  I COULD NOT BELIEVE MY LUCK WHEN I DISCOVERED THIS ORIGINAL SEIKOSHA FOREIGN WITH A TAVANNES 15J 3 POS MOVEMENT. IT IS LIKE SEVERAL SEIKOSHA MOVEMENTS IN 1940' MILITARY WATCHES I RESTORED AND SOLD. THE DIFFERENCE WAS THAT THE COPIES HAD NON ADJUSTABLE 7 JEWEL MOVEMENTS INSTEAD OF 15 JEWELS AND 3 ADJUSTMENTS.

AFTER THE RUSSO-JAPANESE  WAR OF 1905, WITH JAPAN'S STUNNING VICTORY, JAPAN WAS ON THE MOVE. HER EMPIRE ON THE BUILD -MOTIVATED BY A GROWING RIGHT WING IMPERIAL MILITARY, JAPAN, WITH FULL SUPPORT OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY,  RECEIVED THE   RIGHT  TO "COLONIZE" KOREA. IN REALITY, THE US-BRITISH AND FRENCH GOVERNMENTS SIMPLY HANDED OVER KOREA [1910] --WHICH HAD BEEN A RUSSIAN SEMI-COLONY--AS A "REWARD" OR THE LATE "SPOILS RESULTING FROM THE WAR.

IT WAS DURING THIS TIME THAT JAPAN SOUGHT WESTERN TECHNOLOGY IN A BID TO FURTHER WHAT WAS AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY FROM A BACKWARDS TECHNOLOGY NATION OF 1875, TO A NATION THAT DESTROYED TWO RUSSIAN FLEETS IN 1905.

THE ONE AND ONLY POWERFUL SEIKOSHA COMPANY TRAVELED THE GLOBE ABSORBING ALL THE INNOVATIONS IN TIME KEEPING AND SOON BECAME THE MAIN WATCH AND CLOCK DRIVING AND PRODUCING FORCE IN JAPAN. THEY ACTUALLY IMPORTED BRANDED AND NON-BRANDED WATCHES FROM THE LEADING COMPANIES, MAINLY SWISS AND AMERICAN. WATCHES IMPORTED

WITH MILITARY ACTIONS IN KOREA, CHINA, MANCHURIA AND OTHER PLACES, THE DEMAND FOR TIME PIECES OF ALL TYPES LEAD SEIKOSHA TO EITHER UTILIZE OR MODIFIED EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN BRANDS TO PRODUCE  A HOST OF WATCHES WITH NAMES SUCH AS  "NATION"  [ SIGNIFYING THE JAPANESE NATION] SEIKO [AS A MODEL LINE AND NOT NOT A BRAND YET],  FOREIGN, DELIKATA AND OTHERS. THESE WATCHES WOULD BE WORN AND CHERISHED BY  JAPANESE SOLDIERS.

Cyma is a watch brand that has long been associated with accuaracy. Even the name Cyma, derived from the French cime for top or summit indicated the aims of the company, that of reaching the pinnacle of of accuracy. Cyma can trace its routes back to the Schwob brothers Joseph and Theodore, who initially established cyma in 1862 as a watch manufacturer that assembled watches from components derived from multiple Swiss sources.   At about the same time 1871, Henri Sndoz established Sandoz & Cie in Le Locle. However Sandoz moved to Tavannes in 1891, just North of Biel where he focused on the manufacture of highly complex repeaters and chronographs. Soon after this move Sandoz formed a developed a business relationship with the Schwob brothers and Cyma was officially registered in 1903. Sandoz used the most modern of manufacturing processes and produced very high quality time-pieces, trademarked as Tavannes, Cyma and Cyma Tavannes. The quality of the product allowed Tavannes/Cyma to develop into one of the largest Swiss watch manufacturers by 1910. Even basic models were very accurate and many were consequently sold as officially tested chronometers. By the 1920s, Cyma had followed a growing trend to standardise watch part manufacture, but typical of the company, it wasn’t enough to just produce parts that were interchangeable, they had to be precision made to ensure long term accuracy.
