CHRONOGRAPH A RETOUR GEISMAR

IMG_2980.JPG (132835 bytes)

CHRONOGRAPH A RETOUR GEISMAR
With Breitling 639 Base

This Bomber stopwatch mechanism was considered specialized equipment utilized by many European Airforce
in the 1920's and '30s. Producers included **Breitling, Minerva, Leonidas, Universal, Zenith, and **Geismar
The French Lip company created a different movement then those above that had a similar look and use.

**GEISER UTILIZED A BREITLING CHRONOGRAPHS AS THEIR BASE MOVEMENTS
BOTH

C. 638 AND C. 639

Matte steel, triple body with case and double backs, 4 lugs, rotating bi-directional revolving notched bezel with fixed inner triangle/arrow index
marker for target timing, hold-button  to interrupt timing, co-axial start / stop and reset button in the winding crown, reverse timing,
snap-on inner outer case back, heavy wire lugs   1/5th second divisions for30 seconds per revolution  and 5-second Arabic markers ,frosted
gilt,  straight-line lift escapement, monometallic balance, flat balance spring selfcompensating.

WHAT IS THIS AWESOME LEATHER STRAP FOR?
BELOW YOU WILL NOTICE LUGS, THAT IS FOUR TO BE PRECISE.
THE WAY YOU USED THIS TIMING DEVICE WAS TO PLACE IT ON YOUR THIGH
THAT IS, A PILOT OR BOMBARDIER WOULD MOUNT THE DEVICE
ON THEIR LEG USING THE LEATHER STRAP ABOVE

THE GULLIES ON THE BEZEL WERE PLACED THIS WAY TO MAKE TURING THE BEZEL--
WHICH TURNED THE INNER POINTER-- SUPER EASY AND FAST.
WHEN IT IS MOUNTED ON YOUR THIGH YOU CAN USE ONE HAND TO RAPIDLY
PUT THIS BABY THROUGH HER PACES. START STOP, REVERSE, CHANGE

THE DIRECTION OF THE ARROW AND READ IT.  AFTER 10 TO 15 TIMES,
YOU CAN MASTER TIME ITSELF

THE BREITLING 638 IS THE BASE. WHICH MEANS THE ADDED FUNCTIONS, SUCH AS
REVERSE OPERATION WAS ADDED BY THE COMPANY PRODUCING THESE BEAUTIES

IMG_2965.JPG (116662 bytes)

NOTE OUTSIDE COVER HAS
"B"
"638"

BREITLING 638 CHRONO MOVEMENT

Though the appearance of the flyback function was made when the Breitling company
made the first watch in 1923, it used a separate chronograph button to stop and reset

rather than these functions being controlled by the winding-crown.

However the patent of the flyback chronograph belongs to Longines with its first flyback
chronograph dating back to 1936. In fact, the US used a Longines dual register Chrono
with button in crown for the A-7 Pilots watch. go hereTimeFraud Search A-7).

In 1934 the Breitling again hit the mark. They began producing chronographs with a
second chronograph button with the function of returning the seconds hand to zero.
Thus it became possible to measure short intervals of time using the add function.

Yet, the fact is. it was discovered that chronographs equipped watches meant for pilots that had
the flyback function and single button, like the A-7 of the 1930's, were much
easier and efficient from the point of view of time saving and ease of use if these
pilots watches would instantly start, stop and/or restart with one push of one button not three!

As a "Bomb Timer" or "Chronograph with Return" it runs in normal positions [clock wise] then, with a simple pressing of the crown,
the timer runs in reverse. Thus user can reverse timing-- as in running backwards . This model seems to date FROM 1935 to
1940 models. In fine condition, this unusual awesome time piece is an oversized, chromium-plated, 30-second timer/chrono with memory index.

Chronograph "flyback" or "flyback".
The  Chronograph with flyback function has a special feature compared
to a conventional chronograph. The flyback, allows one to reset current
timing and to revive the timer instantly by pressing and quickly releasing the reset button.
This beauty not only does all above but will reverse timing

This flyback chronograph is a complication watch which uses a single push
button for stopping, resetting and restarting or reversing the chronograph function of the watch.

The flyback function has also is titled
Retour-en-vol
(French: retour - to return; en - on; vol - flight)

YOU NOTED THE BROWN CIRCULAR DOTS?
THERE WERE MORE, BUT NO PIC OF IT

THE OTHERS WERE WORN OFF
SOME WERE JUST CIRCLES WITH NOTHING
ROCK WILL RECREATE THESE THE WAY IT WAS
IN 1930'-1940'

IMG_7658.JPG (147230 bytes)

THE ILLUMINATION USED BY ROCK IS AF SUPER LUMINOVA
A NON TOXIC PHOSPHORUS PIGMENT COMBINED WITH LACQUER
THE PROBLEM WITH COLOR IS THE PIGMENT COMES IN
WHITE
GREEN
BLUE
RED
ORANGE

WE NEED A TAN TO BROWN COLOR AND INVESTING IN DIFFERENT COLOR PIGMENT
WOULD COST A TIDY SUM AND MIXING COLORS SIMPLY DOES NOT
PRODUCED THE RESULTS WE REQUIRE

IMG_7659.JPG (139212 bytes)

ABOVE ROCK MIXED LACQUER AND WHITE LUME
HE WILL ADD A PAINT MIX HE DOES NOT OFFER THE RECIPE TO
LACQUER WILL NOT MIX WITH PAINT. WATER OR OIL WOULD

YET A CRYSTAL SHOULD BE AVAILABLE? FORGETABOUTID
YOU HAVE TO USE A PERIOD CRYSTAL!
CELLULOID WAS THE CRYSTAL OF THE DAY

YES, SOME BUFF IT RAW TO REMOVE THE DEEP YELLOW
THAT OCCURS AT THE TOP LAYERS
INTERACTION OF TIME PLUS UV RADIATION

IMG_7670.JPG (167946 bytes)

HERE IS A MIXTURE THAT TURNS THE CRYSTAL INTO A RUBBERY CRYSTAL
CARE MUST BE TAKEN TO FIT IT BEFORE IT DRIES

BUT IS AS STRONG AND PLIABLE AS IT WAS 80  YEARS AGO

IMG_7671.JPG (145291 bytes)
