Frank Howard Buck [known as Franck Buck], was born on March 17, 1884, in Gainesville, Texas and died on March 25, 1950 of **lung cancer.

Frank was a hunter, explorer, and, most important, an innovator of techniques of capturing wild animals and transporting them safely and healthy around the globe.

Frank Buck spent his life in the pursuit of collecting wild animals without the assistance of modern equipment or tranquilizers.

As a "collector of LIVE wild animals," he would become the first movie actor, director, writer and producer of and/ot in, films that promoted wild animals and the stories of their capture. Many known successful actors appeared in his films.

Frank was also is known for his books, including the famous " Bring 'Em Back Alive" and  his 1930s and 40s jungle adventure movies including: Wild Cargo, Jungle Cavalcade, Jacare, and Killer of the Amazon.

Many of his films included staged "fights to the death" between formidable beasts.

A trip to Singapore would began an 18 year exploration of the world's jungles and the exotic animals.  As a Professional Outdoor Adventurer, Frank would travel to Malaya, India, Borneo, New Guinea and Africa bringing back exotic live animal species that he sold to zoos and circuses. Frank Buck even created and stocked the Dallas Zoo. Up until 1929 when the stock market crashed, Frank had made a small fortune. The crash left him penniless.

Frank had acquired the nickname "Bring 'Em Back Alive" for the innovations he created to deliver live healthy animals by using traps and snares in ways that prevented injury to the animals.  He then would personally accompany his animals aboard ships to make certain they were well treated and refused to sell  animals to those whom did not have an impeccable reputation for animal care. Due to the fact of this reputation a friend came to his aid and lent him $6,000-- Frank was soon back to his profitable work and became the prime source of animals for zoos across the globe. In fact, Frank Buck would briefly hold the position of "temporary" director for the San Diego Zoo on June 13, 1923 until he signed to a three-year contract. This position only lasted several months due to clashes with the zoos' directors over how the animals were to be caged and treated.

FRANK BUCK KNIFE

The Utica Cutlery Company was founded in 1910 by a group of prominent Utica businessmen. The original location for the company was 820 Noyes Street. Through the years, several major additions were made to the building, but the address remains the same. The current size of the factory and office is approximately 100,000 square feet. The company has continuously manufactured pocket knives since 1910. In 1918, fixed blade kitchen cutlery was added. During World War II, the company manufactured bayonets and carbine parts and earned UTICA the coveted Army-Navy E., as well as a number of other awards

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus made Buck a lucrative offer to tour as their star attraction by entering the show astride an elephant in 1938, . He refused to join the American Federation of Actors, stating that he was "a scientist, not an actor." Though there was a threat of a strike if he did not join the union, he maintained that it would compromise his principles, saying "Don't get me wrong. I'm with the working man. I worked like a dog once myself. And my heart is with the fellow who works. But I don't want some --- union delegate telling me when to get on and off an elephant." Eventually, the union gave Buck a special dispensation to introduce Gargantuan the gorilla without registering as an actor.
