IMG_2275.JPG (48135 bytes)

BUT THERE IS NO WIDE DEEP SHOULDER
THUS ABSOLUTELY NO SEAL

THIS IS WHERE THE GREATEST WET MOISTURE IS ENTERING THE TIME PIECE
IN ADDITION  THE CASE BACK WAS LACKING SEALS

CRYSTAL SEALED WITH UV CEMENT.
NORMALLY, IN 100% OF ALL CASES
NO GLUE, CEMENT OR ANY OTHER CHEMICAL IS UTILIZED
THE REASON IS SIMPLE
HEAT, COLD, PRESSURE WILL NOT BE COMPENSATED
ANY LONGER  BY PLASTIC CRYSTAL
ALL PLASTIC SHOULD BE PRESSURE FIT BY INSTALLED W./O CEMENT
YET DUE TO CROWN ISSUE WE CAN SEAL WITH UV CEMENT

WALTHAM A-11 TO LEFT

IMG_2044.JPG (39811 bytes)IMG_2059.JPG (53069 bytes)

LEFT ELGIN SINGLE INSET SWEEPS TWO BRIDGES
RIGHT WALTHAM MULTIPLE BRIDGE WITH ADDED SWEEPS

IMG_2061.JPG (33047 bytes)IMG_2062.JPG (27377 bytes)

LEFT ELGIN MAIN SPRING BARREL WITH FIRST WHEEL A PART OF BARREL -COMPACT TWO PIECE ARBOR FITS IN CENTER
CAP SIMPLY CLOSES THE BARREL  KEEPING GREASE AND SPRING IN . WHEN SPRING IS WOUND, THE ARBOR DOES NOT MOVE.
ALL IT DOES IS HOLD EYE OF SPRING AGAINST ARBOR. IT IS THE BARREL THAT MOVES WITH FIRST WHEEL ATTACHED

THE RIGHT IS THE WALTHAM QUICK MAKE. NO WHEEL ON BARREL. THE CAP IS TWO PIECES, THAT MAKES THREE PIECE BARREL
THE ARBOR FITS IN CENTER IT MOVES TO WIND SPRING. IT THEN TURNS THE CAP, WHICH IS ACTUALLY THE FIRST WHEEL
THIS PLACES MORE MOVING PARTS, 10 TIMES THE SPRING TO ARBOR PRESSURE
CAUSES WEAR NOT JUST TO ARBOR HOOK, BUT TO THE THIN WHEEL THAT HAS NO SUPPORT
EVERY WIND BECOMES TWO IN PRESSURE AND 6 IN MOTION

IMG_2079.JPG (34264 bytes)IMG_2078.JPG (27945 bytes)

LEFT ELGIN [AND BULOVA] BARREL CAP AND RATCHET WHEEL

RIGHT WALTHAM BARREL W/NEW OLD STOCK SPRING THAT BROKE
THERE IS NO CAP. THE CAP IS ACTUALLY THE FIRST WHEEL
THAT LARGE PIECE IN CENTER IS PLACED TO BUTTRESS THE CENTER ARBOR
IT DOES NOT MOVE, BUT THE WHEEL DOES
ARBOR FITS THROUGH THIS UNIT BECAUSE WITHOUT IT THE ARBOR WOULD FAIL
YET IT CAUSES THE ARBOR TO WEAR OUT THE SQUARE CUT IN CENTER OF WHEEL/CAP

IMG_2075.JPG (26655 bytes)

ABOVE ARBOR THROUGH THE CENTER PIECE AND THEN SQUARED TOP IN SQUARED "HOLE" IN WHEEL

IMG_2077.JPG (28846 bytes)

NOTE HOW SPRING GOES ROUND THE ARBOR
A HOOK THEN FITS IN EYE HOLE
TURN CROWN TURNS CROWN WHEEL TURNS ARBOR
ARBOR WINDS SPRING
JUST LIKE ELGIN AND BULOVA

BUT THEN, RATHER THEN THE BARREL TURNING TO RELEASE PRESSURE
THE ARBOR TURNS TO TURN THE WHEEL CAP
THIS PUTS 5 TIMES PRESSURE ON ARBOR ENDS AND HOOK

IMG_2069.JPG (31412 bytes)

FRONT TOP OF SPRING HAS EYE HOLE
NOTE IT IS THE NEW ORIGINAL BLUED SPRING  I INVESTED IN

IMG_2067.JPG (24682 bytes)

HERE SHE IS AFTER MAYBE 10 DAYS OF WINDING AND RUNNING
THERE WERE NO BREAKS OR EDGE DAMAGE THAT WAS VISIBLE ON HOOK OF ARBOR

IMG_2066.JPG (23596 bytes)

THIS IS WALTHAM ARBOR
SLIGHTLY THICKER THAN ELGIN OR BULOVA
BECAUSE IT HAS TO CARRY THE MAIN AND MOVE THE WHEEL

IMG_2065.JPG (20469 bytes)

NOTE THE SQUARE END. IT FITS THROUGH SQUARE CUT OUT IN CENTER OF CAP/WHEEL
NOTE IT IS DEEPER THAN ELGIN BECAUSE IT MUST TURN THE WHEEL THAT POWERS THE MOVEMENT
REMEMBER THIS BAIT CAN BE MEASURED AGAINST THE FINEST SIZE TWEEZERS

IMG_2074.JPG (33354 bytes)

NOW, THE UPPER END POWERS WHEEL
THE LOWER GOES THROUGH THE BARREL INTO A HOLES IN THE
CENTER OF THE BARREL CUT - OPPOSITE TO THE ELGIN
BECAUSE THE ELGIN HAS THE BARREL TURNING IT DOES NOT PERFORM
ANY OTHER TASK BUT WINDING THE MAIN  E

IMG_2076.JPG (29331 bytes)

HERE SHE IS FROM A PICK I TOOK TWO THREE WEEKS AGO
BRAND NEW OLD STOCK SPRING
GREASE WAS STILL ON IT FROM 75 YEARS AGO
CLEANED UNROLLED AND GREASED AND OILED
HERE IS WHEN I HAND WOUND IT TO THE BARREL
[I DO NOT USE MAIN SPRING INSTALLERS]
THEN SLIPPED IT OVER THE BARREL ARBOR HOOK
THE HOOK WAS STABLE WITH NY BURS OR ANY VISIBLE DAMAGE
BUT THE FACT IS, THE NEW SPRING AGAINST THE OLD HOOK AND
THE MEASURED PRESSURE OF NOT SIMPLY WINDING THE WATCH
BUT THE RUNNING ON THE ARBOR CAUSED THE ARBOR TO BREAK AND IT DAMAGED THE EYELET

IMG_2070.JPG (31690 bytes)

THIS IS THE EYELET HOLE BEFORE THE BREAK

IMG_2088.JPG (34091 bytes)IMG_2084.JPG (34411 bytes)

ON LEFT WE HAVE ELGIN/BULOVA BARREL INSTALLED
YOU SEE THE STRENGTH OF THE BARREL UNDER THE ATTACHED
CUT FROM ONE PIECE OF BRASS ALLOY WHEEL BARREL
THE ENTIRE BARREL MOVES AROUND THE ARBOR

THE WALTHAM ON RIGHT SHOWS THAT THE CUT THROUGH ONLY REVEALS THE CAP WHEEL. WHY?
THE PRESSURE IS TRICE THAT OF THE BARREL TURNING MAINS

I INSTALLED A ARBOR FROM A PARTS WATCH FOR NOW I FOUND A NEW ONE AND ORDERED IT
BUT I WANTED TO TEST PRESSURE

IMG_2097.JPG (44261 bytes)

HERE IS THE ELGIN ON RIGHT
AND
THE WALTHAM ON LEFT

BOTH ARE RUNNING

I REMOVED THEIR BALANCES COMPLETE WITH BRIDGE COCKS
FROM BOTH. THE ELGIN AND WALTHAM
[SECOND PIC DOWN IS WALTHAM BALANCE COMPLETE]

I THEN REMOVED THE PALLET FORKS

[FIRST PIC WITH RED JEWELS DOWN IS WALTHAM PALLET FORK]

IMG_2092.JPG (26210 bytes)

WALTHAM BALANCE

IMG_2085.JPG (46305 bytes)

I THEN PLACED STEMS AND HELD THE CENTER WHEELS OF BOTH WHILE WINDING
REMOVED THE STEMS SET THEM DOWN AND WATCHES THEM UNWIND WITH A $300 TOOL
THE PRESSURE ON THE ARBORS WERE AMAZING

ELGIN? 7%
WALTHAM 56%

WWII
CENTER SWEEP

Prior to WWII, most watches had a sub-second register above the #6 position. This design failed to allow precision seconds timing. The sub-second style dial, with a tiny second hand rotating around a tiny seconds register at the 6 position, was difficult to utilize for timing events. In most cases it was ignored. On the other hand, a sweep second hand could be used to time events, mark events, and was easier to read .

By 1942, the sweep second hand watch had became "the" watch. Two of the major reasons were the Government issued U.S.A. A-11 hacking sweep seconds pilots watch and the sweep seconds watches in demand by Doctors, Medics and Nurses and other professionals.. The sweep second watch simply made the watch more than an instrument to "tell time"....

THE DESIGN

So, what did Pierce and others do?

Did they re-tool and re-design new movements? NO!

They simply placed a hollow canon pinion that allowed a wheeled center shaft to protrude through the dial, mounted a second hand to it, and ran the combo with the very sub-seconds wheel they were eliminating...

wpe1.jpg (30490 bytes)
gsw/MWB/gsww archive photo

Instead of the drive train turning the dial protruding shaft/pinion at 6 position connected to the tiny second hand, they mounted a large brass/alloy wheel on the opposite side of the shaft that now protruded through the bridge. That wheel turned a wheel on top of a NEW center "shaft' held in position be a new this jeweled bridge that went through a new HOLLOW center cannon pinion in the center of the movement that then protruded through the center of the dial where a new long sweep second hand attached;  the idea being that one had a large second hand that went round in tune with the movement and the chapter ring so one could count, time & now even synchronize.
