The Lowell Sun Charities Golden Gloves has been a staple in the great city of Lowell, Mass for over 68 years. Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, and Micky Ward all began their boxing careers at the New England Golden Gloves.  

Many former Golden Gloves amateur boxing champions have gone on to become outstanding boxers and role models in our country.   Former Heavyweight Champion of the World, Joe Louis was a Golden Gloves Champion in 1934. Muhammed Ali (1960); Sugar Ray Leonard (1973); “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler (1973); Michael Spinks (1974); Thomas “Hitman” Hearns (1977); Johnny Tapia (1984); Mike Tyson (1984); Evander Holyfield (1984); Oscar De La Hoya (1989) and Jermain Taylor (1998 and 1999) all got their start in the Golden Gloves tournaments.

The Lowell Sun Charities organization, was established in 1947 to respond to the ever increasing challenges of the community.  2014 marks the 68th year the Golden Gloves have been held in the great city of Lowell, Mass. Proceeds from the Golden Gloves go directly to Lowell Area Charities in need.  Help us by becoming a Champion for Charity!

The highlight or the year was fhe slaving of the National Golden Gloves tournament, under (he sponsorship of Lowell Sun Charities, when The Top Amateur Boxers of the nation converged ' on Lowell Memorial Auditorium for the weeklong event.

Heavyweight champion George Foreman and Ken Norton, along with (heir handlers, were held in Caracas lodav pending posting a bond for payment of taxes, the San Diego group which handles Norton. is in chaos," said Bill Bimn.  The promoter has left town, leaving us with a lot of bills and committments.

Lowell Glovers win  - If they ever get around to naming an outstanding boxer here in the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions, which moved info semi final action at noon here at the Denver Auditorium today and culminates in championship bouts tonight, the judges will have to look long and hard al Lowell's Bobby Stewart, THE SUN CHARITIES glover' af 175 pounds not only appear to be on lb: verge or taking down a National title, but has to stand out as the top boxer here.

Bobby Stewart, who tallied tournament victories Monday night, kept his win skein in fact last night as he decisively defeated Ned Ifalliscy or Hutchinson, Kansas, in a quarter - final bout; another decisive viclory was Lowell's Wilbur Cameron, who decisional (toy Phillips of Forth Worth, Texas in a IsS - pound thriller. CAMMIOX, ON the other hand, fought a great bout scoring a brace o knockdown", in the third round to easily defeat Phillips. Cameron was in charge throughout ihc bout. He jabbed, hooked and tossed clever combinations over the first rounds and had Phillip on a run at  hell. thee second round the same methods kept the Te.VHri from doing any damage and in the third stanza Cameron real)1 found Ihe range with a left Jab and a right cross pulling Phillips down for eigiil counts. IT WAS AN easy victory far Cameron, who boxes out of Springfield and gained a berth nn the Sun Charities' team when he von the N - ;w England title as a member of Ihe Hokokc suuad. The night belonged to Stewart however.

The classy 175 - pound glover hnvid brilliantly in defeating llallisey. From Ihc opening bell to Ihe close of the third round Stewart pressed relentlessly, nutjabhed Halliscy who was favored to annex (ii - 2 light heavy title here and generally controlled the bout throughout. Stewart had won the Junior Xatlonal 1it!e in 1972. He won thc North American AAU crown this year and was a standout performer in the Western .Mass. flolden Gloves Tournament as ivell as the New England Tournament in Lowell.

So, two great boxers, one of whom mav be named outstanding boxer al a tournament which saw 32 teams ot glovers numbering. 318 hopefuls, go through three days of rugged aclion are on the verge of life. LOWELL SUNDAY SUN, JANUARY G, 1974 Golden Gloves launch 28th year here Tues. LOWELL - Folks will have e chance to gel away from their T.V. sets and see the best of real live action Tuesday night when Lowell Sun ' Charities opens its 28th season of Golden Gloves boding in (he Memorial Auditorium.

The Sun Charities 28th animal Golden Gloves tournament was off to an excellent start last Tuesday night with close to 10M fans on hand. The first bout will be the 175/178 pound Robert Stewart of Lowell, Another outstanding program will be upcoming this Tuesday night at 8:30 o'clock Tor the second Greater - Lowell preliminary. Since the shows have been running smoothly for the past 27 years, many fans are not aware of the gentlemen out in Liberty hail responsible for the efficient handling of bouts. Things start oil with a physical examination by Dr. Harry Ginshurg. of Lowell, and sanctioned by the Slale Boxing Commission.

At first, the conleslanls report to Jimmy McMullcn, direclor ot boxers.
