IMG_1523.JPG (134495 bytes)

NOTE STIRRUPS UNDER THE SHOES OF BOTH RIDERS

The stirrup was believed to have been invented in China in the second century A.D. and spread westward through the nomadic peoples of Central Eurasia. But when the life-size Terra-cotta warriors and horses of the Qin Dynasty (221-206BC) were unearthed in Lintong District of Xi'an in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, it is stated that saddles on the horses had stirrups.

The first representation of a rider with paired stirrups was in a Jin Dynasty (265-420) tomb of about 322. The stirrup began as a single device used to get up and onto the saddle. The paired stirrup was stated to be credited to the Chinese Jin Dynasty and came to Europe during the Middle Ages. The stirrup spread throughout Eurasia by the great horsemen of the central Asian steppes. Stirrups may have first reached Scandinavia and were documented in Central Europe during the reign of Charles Martel in the 8th century. In Holiare, Slovakia, a pair of stirrups were discovered in an 8th century burial.

IN THIS PAINTING USING INKS AND WATER COLORS
THE DATE IS ALSO NEAR THE ABOVE.

HOW DID WE COME TO INVEST IN THE ART WORK BEING OFFERED?

I STAYED AT THE PARK LANE HOTEL, OWNED & OPERATED BY Leona Mindy Roberts Helmsley , WIFE OF BILLIONAIRE HELMSLEY OVERLOOKING CENTRAL PARK. IT WAS MY FIRST STAY IN A GENUINE 5 STAR HOTEL. YOU SEE, I GREW UP ON THE STREETS. I REMEMBER THINKING THAT ONE DAY I WOULD HAVE THE CASH TO STAY IN ONE OF THESE HOTELS.

WHILE I SURELY  WAS NOT RICH, I WAS RICH FOR THE MOMENT WITH 5000,00 BUCKS IN CASH IN A MONEY BELT AND DROVE A CADILLAC ELDORADO, RED WITH WHITE LEATHER AND 500 CI ENGINE.

A FUNNY THING HAD TO OCCUR OR WE NEVER WOULD HAVE FOUND THE TWO ORPHANS

WHEN WE GOT READY TO DRIVE 1500 MILES, I RECALLED THE POLES THAT FIT ACROSS THE BACK SEAT OF ALL CARS OF THE MIDDLE CLASS FAMILIES WHO DROVE FROM THE NORTH TO THE SOUTH DURING THE  MIAMI SEASON TO VACATION ON MIAMI BEACH. THEY ALL HAD POLES THAT FIT ACROSS THE CAR IN THE BACK SO THEY COULD HANG THEIR HANGERED CLOTHING..

SO I BOUGHT AND INSTALLED ONE IT IN MY AWESOME SHINY 5 YEAR OLD CADDY ELD.  SOON WE HAD 40 HANGERS OF CLOTHING SWISHING BACK AND FORTH AS WE HIT THE ROAD.

ALONG THE WAY WE STOPPED IN DIFFERENT CITIES, LIKE WASHINGTON DC. AT EACH STOP WE WOULD STAY IN TOP HOTELS. BUT NONE WERE 45 STARS AND ALL WERE USED TO US CITIZENS IN US CARS WITH US MADE CLOTHING POLES. I MEAN THE LOBBIES WERE FULL OF LUGGAGE RACKS WITH BARE NAKED CLOTHING SWISHING BACK AND FORTH AS THE BELL BOYS [AND MEN] PUSHED THE WHEELED RACKS.

WELL, EVENTUALLY WE ARRIVED IN THE   "CITY". 5 DAYS WERE ALLOTTED. SO, [MY LADY AND I PULL UP TO WHAT WOULD BE OUR FIRST STAY EVER IN A 5 STAR HOTEL. THE TROOPERS APPEARED IN AN INSTANT OPENING DOORS, PULLING LUGGAGE FROM THE TRUNK, AND THEN TRANSFERRING THE 40 HANGERS WITH CLOTHING ONTO THE WHEELED "TWO STORY" [THEY LOOKED LIKE THAT TO US WHEN FULL OF THOSE NAKED HANGERS] LUGGAGE RACKS.

THUS, IN AN INSTANT, OUR LUGGAGE RACK, FULL OF "HANGERED" CLOTHING, SWISHING BACK AND FORTH, FOLLOWED US INTO THE HUGE LUXURIOUS LOBBY LIKE 4 YEAR OLDS HANGING ONTO THEIR MOMAS SKIRTS. EVERY WHERE WE TURNED, A BELL HOP WAS SURELY TRAVELING WITH US.

IT WAS THEN, IN THE LOBBY, THAT I NOTICED GUESTS THAT CHECKING IN AND OUT ALSO HAD A KEEN BELLHOP PUSHING THEIR WHEELED ONE STORY [OURS WAS TWO STORIES CAUSE EVERYONE STARED AT IT] LUGGAGE RACKS ON WHEELS. EVERYONE HAD RICHLY   ENGRAVED AND IMPRINTED IN MONEY NAMES LIKE GUCCI. YES, NO ONE EVEN NOTED THESE ROLLING CLOTHING RACKS HUNG  WITH THE ELEGANCE OF NAME BRANDS RATER THAN NAKEDNESS.   I FELT EMBARRASSMENT. IN FACT, WHEN ASKED BY A YOUNG MAN IF THE RACK WAS OURS, I SIMPLY IGNORED HIM AND ASKED TO USE THEIR "STRONG ROOM" [NO CREDIT CARDS NO ROOM SERVICE] TO REMOVE MY MONEY BELT SO I COULD OFFER  1500.00 BUCKS IN CASH SO WE COULD HAVE ROOM SERVICE.

AS SOON AS WE [WELL THE BELL BOY] HAD TRANSFERRED THE NAKED CLOTHING TO A CLOSET, AND WERE SETTLED IN OUR LARGE. 12 STORY [I ACTUALLY DO NOT RECALL THE FLOOR NUMBER] ROOM OVERLOOKING CENTRAL PARK, I ORDERED AN EXPENSIVE DINER.

THE WAITER ARRIVED WHEELING IN THE ROLLER TABLE. HE COOLLY AND EFFICIENTLY SET THE TABLE, LIFTED THE PLATE COVERS AND THEN, WITH WHITE TOWEL OVER HIS ARM, STOOD AT ATTENTION.

I THOUGHT, WOW, THE WAITER IS GONNA WAIT? --PUN NOT INTENDED-- I HAD EXPERIENCE [REMEMBER GOOD FELLOWS]. I HAD DRIVEN UP FROM THE SOUTH WITH MY LADY & CHECKED IN AND ORDERED ROOM SERVICE IN ALL THE HI END HOTELS.  AT EVERY ONE THE TIP WAS IN THE BILL THAT I SIGNED ON..

SO, THERE WE WERE. A ROOM [SUITES WERE LIKE 1000.00] OVER LOOKING THE PARK. A ROLL IN WHITE CLOTH COVERED TABLE WITH ROSES. AN AWESOME SPREAD OF LOBSTER AND STEAK...AND... WITH OUR OWN  WAITER...

SOON, LO AND BEHOLD, THE WAITER MADE A "HUMPH" SOUND AND LEFT RATHER FAST.

I WAS STARVING, ET IT BUGGED ME THAT THE WAITER ACTED WEIRDLY. IT WAS THEN THAT MY LADY, NOTICING THE BLANK LOOK ON MY FACE,  SAID: "I DO NOT BELIEVE THE TIP IS INCLUDED IN THE BILL..."

WELL, I SAT THERE DOUBLY EMBARRASSED.. THINK ABOUT IT. THEY, THOSE OF THE STAFF, WERE MORE THAN TAKING IT UP. THE COUPLE IN THE RED ELD WITH .. "DID YOU SEE THAT?" THE CLOTHING?? ON A RACK? HE HAW HE HAW WHO WERE THEY? WHAT ROOM?

NOW I HAD A WAITER SAYING HE DID NOT GET A TIP....NOT EVEN 5 BUCKS!

I JUMPED UP, SNATCHED THE PHONE OFF THE CRADLE AND HIT THE MAITRE D BUTTON. THE MAITRE D ANSWERED  AND I SAID IN A MEASURED FLEETING TONE, , " I BELIEVE OUR WAITER DROPPED SOMETHING IN OUR ROOM, CAN YOU PLEASE SEND HIM UP."

WITHIN 10 MINUTES THE KNOCK AT THE DOOR INFORMED ME HE WAS THERE. I OPENED THE DOOR AND IN ONE SWIFT MOTION I "GRANTED" HIM. THAT'S RIGHT, G R A N T E D H I M!

I HANDED HIM A NICELY FOLDED 50 DOLLAR BILL WHILE SAYING "I THINK YOU DROPPED THIS"

WHAT HAS THIS STORY TO DO WITH THIS OFFER? WELL, EVERYTHING. THE NEXT DAY WE GOT UP, SHOWERED, DRESSED, AND TOOK THE SWIFT ELEVATOR   [THEY HAD REGULAR AND SWIFT ELEVATOR, THOUGH BOTH WERE FAST. ] TO THE AWESOME LOBBY.

AS WE STEPPED OUT IT WAS IMMEDIATELY APPARENT THE WORD GOT AROUND ABOUT THE 50 BUCK TIP. RATHER THAN SNICKERS ABOUT OUR SWINGING ON THE RACK, WE WERE TREATED LIKE ROYALTY; FOR 5 DAYS WE STAYED THE STAFF MADE SURE WE RECEIVED MORE THAN PROPER TREATMENT AND I MAID SURE MY TIPS WERE GENEROUS WITHOUT GRANTING ANYONE ELSE..

ON DAY 4 WE ASKED THE DOOR MAN --WHO HAD PROVIDED THE MOST RECOMMENDATIONS CONCERNING PLACES TO GO-- WHERE WE SHOULD GO TO GET SOMETHING TO REMIND US OF OUR TRIP --I GREW UP IN N.Y. BUT NEVER EVER WENT WHERE THE RICH AND FAMOUS WENT NOR, AS I STATED, RESIDED IN A HOTEL LIKE THE ONE WE WERE IN.

HE ASKED WHAT I WAS THINKING OF AND I SAID" WE COLLECT ANTIQUES"

HE GAVE THE CAB STAND A HAND SIGNAL, A CAB LEAPT LIKE A LIONESS ON A ZEBRA TO MEET US WITH HIS BACK DOOR RIGHT IN FRONT OF US. THEN, THE DOOR MAN OPENED THE DOOR, WE GOT IN, HE CLOSED IT AND STEPPED TO THE PLATE LIKE A RUNNER IN THE LAST INNING ON A  HOME RUN DRIVE. HE SPOKE TO THE CAB DRIVER AND GAVE HIM A HAND SIGNAL AND THE CABBY -I AM NOT KIDDING- PUNCHED IT. I RECALL HIM DRIVING LIKE ANDRETTI...

-STAYING IN THE "CITY" YOU DO NOT WANT TO DIVE YOUR OWN CAR

WITHIN 15 MINUTES WE ARRIVED OUTSIDE OF SOHO. AN AREA [BACK THEN] WITH AWESOME, EXPENSIVE ANTIQUE SHOPS. AFTER LOOKING FOR SEVERAL HOURS, WE WENT BACK TO A SHOP THAT ADVERTISED "ANTIQUES FROM THE ORIENT".

IT WAS A STORE OWNED BY A JEWISH FAMILY WHOM HAD TRAVELED BACK AND FORTH TO ASIA SINCE THE END OF WWII. MOST ITEMS WERE IN THE TOP PRICE RANGE. BUT, THIS FACT ASSURED US THE PRODUCT WAS GENUINE. WE PURCHASED THE TWO PAINTINGS AND A 6X6 FOOT $1800.00 CHINESE EMPEROR WITH HIS COURT WATER COLOR ON RICE PAPER AND SILK VALUED BY THE PROPRIETER AT 2500.00.AND, A JAPANESE SAMURI COMIC BOOK, AND A WOOD FRAMED SUMO WRESTLER PAINTING ON REVERS GLASS.

CONSERVATION TO REMOVE CREASES DUE TO STORAGE AND CLEAN DUST AND SOOT WITHOUT HAVING TO RE-TOUCH PAINT WAS 450.00/ [ACTUAL PRICE BEFORE OFFERRING 5 PAINTINGS WAS 650.00], THE TWO HORSE INK AND WATER COLOR ALSO WERE CONSERVED AND THE "COMIC" --NOT FUNNY- SAMURI WAS WORKED ON.

. IMG_1527.JPG (160407 bytes)

THE ART DEALER STATED THE FRAMING AND MATTING WERE ACCOMPLISHED IN THE 1930'. IT IS SIGNED AND HAS TWO CHOPS. THE FRAME IS WOOD CARVED TO RESEMBLE BAMBOO. IT HAS NOT BEEN OPENED OR THE PAINING REMOVED SINCE THAT DATE.

IMG_1522.JPG (163390 bytes)

THE SIZE OF THE HANDMADE WOODEN FRAME IS 23 X 17
THOUGH NOT BRITTLE FROM ACID IT
IT HAS DARKENED CONSIDERABLY

IMG_1729.JPG (121898 bytes)

THE FRAME & PAINTINGS WERE CONSERVED IN 1979
OLD DISCOLORED MATTING & ACIDIC WOOD BACKS REPLACED
FRAME TIGHTENED & FRAME FINISH TOUCHED UP
AT A COST OF 200.00 [100 EACH] IN 1979

THE ACTUAL PAINTING WAS NOT TOUCHED. ONLY THE BACK WAS INSPECTED AND
INSURED THAT THE ORIGINAL 1920' WOOD HAD NOT DAMAGED THE SILK CANVAS.
THE  OLD HANGING WIRE & PAPER BACKS [DARKENED BY ACID FROM THE WOOD BACKS] WERE ALSO RECOMMENDED TO BE REPLACED,

I AGREED TO IT ALL EXCEPT THE PAPER BACKING AND WIRE AND HOOKS. COST WAS 190 EACH... THEN AN ADDITIONAL 10.00 TO HAVE THE OLD GLUED PAPER BACK REMOVED

THUS THE PAPER BACK, WIRE AND HOOKS WERE REMOVED AND PLACED BACK ON.

IN THE 36 YEARS SINCE, THE PAINTINGS TRAVELED WITH US AND HUNG ON DISPLAY. NO UV LIGHTING TOUCHED THEM, NOT SUN LIGHT NOR MAN MADE. OF COURSE THE ORIGINAL BACK PAPER IS STILL  DISCOLORED . NOTE THE MATTING IS NOT FOAM

IMG_1724.JPG (120043 bytes)

THE HAND MADE WOODEN FRAME DEPTH IS 1.2 INCHES

IMG_1696.JPG (176014 bytes)
THE SILK CANVAS AND THE MATTING LOOK
LIKE THEY WERE FINISHED YESTERDAY

IMG_1698.JPG (180825 bytes)

THE HAND RUBBED FINISH IS A RUBBED COPPER & GOLD

IMG_1719.JPG (181215 bytes)

IT WAS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED I HAVE THE PAINTINGS ON SILK BE
CHECKED FOR DAMAGE ON THE REVERSE DURING CONSERVATION.

IMG_1714.JPG (133205 bytes)

THE ORIGINAL 1920 WIRE

IMG_1711.JPG (159479 bytes)

THE ONLY DAMAGE IS ABOVE ON THE FRAME BACK
IT OCCURRED DURING TRANSPORT IN 1993
A SMALL TEAR & THE ORIGINAL 1920 WIRE IS , WELL, OLD

IMG_1712.JPG (150564 bytes)

THE  SMALL TEAR DEMONSTRATES THE AGE OF THE WOOD AND THE NEW BACKING
UNDER THE PAPER CAN BE SEEN NOT TO BE 1920 SOLID WOOD BOARD BACKS

IMG_1709.JPG (153180 bytes)

THE BACK IS WOOD COVERED WITH A THICK PAPER
NOTE CONDITION

IMG_1723.JPG (162919 bytes)

ALSO SOME SCRAPPING AND MINOR NICKS TO THE WOOD FRAME WERE REPAIRED. NOTE
COPPER AND GOLD. NOW, T WAS RECOMMENDED NOT TO REPLACE THE OLD FINISH WITH A NEW FINISH,

IMG_1721.JPG (180741 bytes)

IN THE PICTURES ABOVE YOU YOU CAN SEE HOW THEY STAINED THE WORN
AREAS. ON THE WALL IT IS HARD TO SEE THESE. ONLY A FEW EXIST

IMG_1722.JPG (187360 bytes)

THE SMALL DENTS WERE DEEPER . THEY STATED THEY USED WATER TO
EXPAND THESE AREAS THEN STAINED THEM TO OFFER NATURAL LOOK.

IMG_1717.JPG (171691 bytes)
NOTE HARNESS

IMG_1718.JPG (116301 bytes)
THIS LOOKS TO BE A SWORD. EVEN THOUGH
THE ARTIST DID NOT SHOW A HILT

IMG_1716.JPG (185929 bytes)

KNOTTED TAIL

IMG_1521.JPG (151458 bytes)

THE AREAS IN THIS PICTURE OF THE PAINTING SQUARES AND SUCH IN THE BACK GROUND ARE ACTUALLY REFLECTIONS OF MOUNTED ART ON OPPOSITE WALLS

IMG_1530.JPG (169738 bytes)

HERE WITH FLASH WE SEE HOW CLEAN THE CANVAS IS.

IMG_1702.JPG (150974 bytes)

CHINESE CHARACTERS AT BOTTOM
IMG_1701.JPG (127403 bytes)

CHINESE CHOPS
[SIGNATURE]

IMG_1695.JPG (203754 bytes)

THE COLORS WERE MOST DEFINITIVELY BRIGHTER
AND DARKER WHEN FIRST  ACCOMPLISHED
JUST COUNTING THE 1920'S TO TODAY
THE ACTUAL COLOR IS EXTREMELY BRIGHT & CLEAR
[THE YEAR THIS WAS PAINTED WAS STATED TO BE 1900] YET AFTER A CENTURY OR MORE
IS WATER COLOR DOES NOT HAVE INTRICATE FINE DETAIL,
IT HAS A TEXTURE COLOR AND DETAILS THAT REVEAL THEM
SELVES. NO ONE MISSES THIS GREAT WORK NO ONE. IT SIMPLY
CATCHES ALL VISITORS IMMEDIATELY. THEY SEE IT AND STOP
