Washington Post, Nov 21, 1919 Kay Jewelry Store to Open Premises at 407 Seventh Street Are Remodeled for New Business. The Kay Jewelry store, 407 Seventh street northwest, of of a chain of 26 stores operating in as many big cities, has remodeled the premises formerly occupied by the Columbia Shoe Company, and will open Monday, November 24, with a complete line of fine diamonds, watches and jewelry. M.S. Goldnamer, secretary and treasurer, who will manage the Washington store, was for many years the manager of the National Furniture Company and late sales manager of the Hub Furniture Company.

FINE SWANS NECK BALANCE ADJUSTMENT
Note the “Balance Cock” has a Swan Neck device embracing the regulator lever. The Swan Neck is an auxiliary device applied to the conventional regulator of a watch movement and it was only to be found on the finest of movements– especially back in 1921. This device provides awesome fine tuning and adjustment of the regulator position and assure the firm maintenance of this adjustment position once established.I have read where some state it is not a “fine watch” mechanism, but fact is, until the mid 20th century and the mass production of mechanical watches, you did not discover this device unless it was utilized in a RARE POSITION ADJUSTED & TEMP ADJUSTED FINE WATCH!
Adjusted to Temperature ( Heat & Cold)
Temperature adjustment was a lengthy process, usually conducted over the span of several days. Movements were carefully timed in climate-controlled boxes of both temperature extremes, 40 degrees for cold and 90 degree for heat; compensating for the expansion and contraction in the metal balance wheel in different temperatures, averaging the timing differences between both extremes.
Adjusted to Isochronism
Isochronism adjustments were conducted to maintain a uniform performance while the mainspring gradually loses power from wind-up to wind-down. This is achieved by modifying the pinning and vibration of the hairspring, attempting to equalize the rotation angles of the balance wheel regardless of the strength of power remaining in the mainspring.
Adjusted to Positions
Position adjustments attempt to average the timing errors between positions for more precise timekeeping. Deviations in positional rates are caused by frictional and poise errors, which are more prevalent in the vertical positions. Depending on the qualifications for the grade determined by the manufacturer, the ‘watch would be timed and adjusted using the following positions.

NICKEL FINISH, SWISS BARS & DAMASKEENED
Nickel movements are characterized by a silvery, often-polished, finish on the movement plates, usually containing decorative damaskeening patterns. Once nickel movements became popular in the late 1800s, they often sold for a premium when compared to identical gilt movements. The nickel material was more durable and offered a better surface for decorative machining methods & Damaskeening.

If you take a simple barrel and attach a ratcheted winding-gear to the center-arbor, then the mainspring can be wound by turning the center arbor rather than turning the barrel. The winding power is applied to the center-arbor through an arrangement of winding gears.
The Crown is attached to a Stem, when turned, the Stem turns a “WINDING PINION”, which then turns the bottom left “CROWN WHEEL”, which then turns the large top left wheel, the “RATCHET WHEEL”, which turns the Barrel Arbor, which then Winds The Main Spring,
The Main Spring unwinding powers the watch. Note the GEARED outer rim of the barrel below; this imparts the mainspring’s power to the gear-train of the watch. A big advantage of this arrangement is that the barrel always maintains spring tension, even while the watch is being wound; an excellent centuries solution to the problem of maintaining-power!
Thus the name “going barrel”… because the barrel is always “going”, even when the watch is being wound.

To IT whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. RE AVES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State 5 of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double Rollers for Watch-Escapements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of mechanisms known as the escapement of watches, and particularly to a double roller to be used in connection therewith, all of which will more fully hereinafter appear,
The principal object of this invention is to provide a simple, economical, and efficient double roller for watch-escapements, made in two parts and arranged to be detachably secured together, so that it may be separated easily and always assembled in correct relation.
Further objects of the invention will appear from an examination of the drawings and the following description and claims.
The invention consists principally in a double roller for watch-escapements, made in two parts detachably secured together, and means for assisting in the assembled relation of such parts to hold them in correct relation.
The invention consists, further and finally, in the features, combinations, and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of an escapement having a double roller constructed in accordance with these improvements; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, an enlarged sectional elevation taken on line 3 of Fig. 1, illustrating a roller constructed in accordance with these improvements; Fig. 4, a plan view of the lower flange on the roller proper looking at it from below, and Fig. 5 a plan view of the main or lower portion of the roller looking at it from above.
In the art to which this invention relates it is well known that a double roller is very advantageous in that better adjustments of time can be made, owing to the fact that the roller-jewel can be located at the maximum distance from the axis of the balance-staff.
It therefore becomes desirable to make a further or detailed description here.
DBL roller which will have this advantage and the additional one of being easily separated for purposes of repair, renewal, and adjustment, all of which will be understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.
In making a roller in accordance with these improvements I provide a main or lower portion at, having an upwardly-extending roller jewel I) located therein at its maximum distance from the axis of the staff-opening c in such roller. This main or lower portion is also provided with a circular recess (1 in the upper face thereof, having a dowel-pin hole e extending there through. I next provide a roller portion proper,f, having a passing hollow Q therein arranged opposite the roller jewel, and an integral downwardly-extending tubular portion 71, provided with a circular flange t’ at the bottom thereof. This circular flanged portion is of a size to snugly fit the upper recess (1 in the lower portion of the roller and is further provided with a dowelpin 70, arranged to fit the dowel-pin hole in such recess.
In operation the roller is placed on the balance-staff t and the usual pallet Z and fork m are supplied, operating with the rest of the escapement and watch-train, all of which is old and well known in the art and needs no The fork has the slot and horn portions n at the front portion engaging with the roller-jewel and is further provided with a dart p, arranged when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1 to rest in the passing hollow and at other times on the periphery of the roller proper until such roller rotates backward and releases the same, all of which is well known and understood by those skilled in the art.
The roller or different parts thereof may be placed together and brought into correct relation without any fitting or may be sepa* rated for the purposes of repair, renewal, or adjustment with the assurance that they can be reassembled in the correct relation.
I claim-*- 1. In a double roller escapement for watches, a balance stafi, a double roller formed in two parts detachably secured together, and means for assisting in the assem bled relation of such parts to hold them in correct relation, substantially as described.
2. In a double roller escapement for watches, a balance staff, a double roller formed of a main portion carrying a rollerjewel, a supplementary disk portion provided with a passing hollow, a tubular portion detachably connecting both of such portions, and means for holding such portions in correct relation, substantially as described.
3. In a double roller escapement for Watches, a balance-staif, the combination of a main portion provided with a roller-jewel extending upwardly there through, a disk portion of smaller diameter provided with a passing hollow, an integral tubular portion extending downwardly therefrom having a flange in its lower portion, and means for holding such parts in correct relation, substantially as described.
4. In a double roller escapement for watches, a balance staif, a double roller formed of a main portion carrying an upwardly-extending roller-jewel and a circular recess in its upper portion, a disk roller of smaller diameter provided with a passing hollow and an integral tubular portion extending downwardly therefrom and having a circular flange at its lower end fitting the circular recess in the main portion, and dowel pin mechanism for holding such parts in their correct relation, substantially as described.
